Re: Easy fishing in Hua Hin

It rained heavily in the area for hours on Monday. The freshwater drained off into the sea and by the evening fish, prawns, crabs and other marine life started bobbing to the surface to breathe, unable to get enough dissolved oxygen. On Tuesday morning huge numbers of small fish, mostly ponyfish, w...

Re: Drones/Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV)

I don’t think it is, necessarily, it’s just the minimum height limit set by the CAA, similar to manned aircraft having to be above 500 feet except for take-off, landing, emergencies or sanctioned manoeuvres. My guess would be that it is enough height to allow an operator to steer the craft away from...

Re: Drones/Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV)

Registration is required in the US and I can see it coming to the UK fairly soon too. I think it needs to be an all or nothing approach otherwise it becomes an even greater bureaucratic nightmare. Too bad for people with the 900 Baht drones but nobody is forced to buy them. There is a huge amount of...

Yorkshire Pub Grub - best in the world

North Yorkshire's The Black Swan 'best restaurant in the world’ according to this BBC news piece. I’ve not been there but did have dinner at the second on the list many, many years ago. I was interested to see ‘David’s Kitchen’ from Chang Mai make the lists - anyone been there? http://www.bbc.co.uk/...

Re: Roast Beef

The French Buther on Soi 88, that’s where I’ve got beef roasting joints before. As everyone says, he’s a nice helpful chap, especially if you speak some French. Be prepared for him to be mildly amused if you ask him for roast beef since “rosbif” if French slang for an English person.

Re: Thailand to the UK by road

VS, I think this would be an epic adventure and I’m quite green with envy! Like Nereus I’m a Land Rover man and similarly recommend a Toyota. There are some big, basic decisions to make based on your route, such as whether you want to have one car for the trip or source different ones on the ...

Re: The i-things - Apple devices and software thread

one for debate: is anyone contemplating buying the iPhone 10? My iPhone 5 is reaching the end of its life after a particularly rainy run one morning... maybe looking for a replacement... GN. I have a 7+ and find it very suitable for my requirements. It is water resistant so would’t be bothered by a...

I stand corrected. I don’t watch YouTube documentaries but also had no clue there is human activity of this kind.

Re: What Nationality Are You

There’s a whole can of worms opened here. Parisians will tell you they are not French, but Parisian while the Catalans are determined to be independent from Spain. I’m still not convinced that someone from Argentina or Brazil would describe their nationality as “South American” so don’t get the USA ...

Re: Shop that can increase storage space on laptop

Good heavy duty disk drives (used by banks, airlines, large companies) cost 4,000 US$ each (128GB). Junk that ends up in laptops and PCs is maybe 2% of all the revenue disk drive manufacturers make. I don’t know any large company that would pay $4,000 for a 128GB drive. Yes, they use ‘enterprise’ g...

Re: What Nationality Are You

Glad you put USA and not American. Apparently its wrong now to say one is just American. Rather it needs to be something - American, and I'm not one of those. I was curious about this as the list is a blend of countries and nationalities and I wasn’t sure why. For example, the list includes Austral...

Re: Revolutionary Road Crossing for Hua Hin

Firstly I feel the word "revolutionary" is thrown around far too easily these days. Secondly, I worry that anything that makes people feel safer crossing the road here could well be counter-productive to preventing RTAs Quite right, Pleng. Perhaps better served by an ”evolutionary” crossing based o...

Re: The Beer Thread

For re-hydration (and for when I'm feeling literally "out of salts") I dissolve a sachet of Sea-Lyte in water. B250 for a box of 50 from the local pharmacy. A pinch of salt in your water/Coke/Fanta is an alternative... 1 teaspoon of salt and 7 teaspoons of sugar in 1 litre of water. This is what ai...

Re: Shop that can increase storage space on laptop

An external USB drive can only really be used for storage. Programs like those from Adobe (everyone calls them “apps” these days!) need to be installed on the same drive as the OS so won’t work from USB. Goodness knows where all your space has gone but buy a 2.5” internal 500GB drive from invadeIT o...
