An ancient tradition - with a touch of humour..

It's Chinese New Year, and as usual, Puy who owns the Romantic Bar set out the best display of Buddha offerings in Soi Bintabaht. Also, as usual, I was given the task of lighting the cracker string. Then came the burning of the paper money - a cellophane wrapped kit containing paper coins, paper ban...

Re: Tsunami 12 years on, 400 bodies unidentified in Thailand

The 'Black Swan' event that one should keep in mind in Hua Hin is not Tsunami, but Earthquake. The published earthquake risk factors for the area do not square well with the local surface geology, which shows many signs of relatively recent and irregular upward movement, Whilst the odds of a really ...

Re: Tsunami 12 years on, 400 bodies unidentified in Thailand

no chance of getting a tsunami inside the gulf, i can't quote the reasons why, but it can't happen Correct. For a serious tsunami to kick off, you need a tectonic shift in deep water - typically a contraction in the seabed that forces out the column of water above it. The ocean to the west of Thail...

Re: Tough action against Hua Hin beach encroachers

The video shows a half baked surveying exercise - not something you'd expect just before the bulldozers went in - unless there's a compensation fund..

Re: Hua Hin to get it's own walking street?

I wish the other streets around Bintabaht area also would become "Walking Streets" after dark. They are just as narrow as Bintabaht. Poonsuk is used as a rat run to dodge the traffic lights, and you constantly get fat 4x4s forcing their way down there.. - a night time width restriction that was tuk...

Re: Guest Friendly Hotels

Hand in hand?! Then the reception staff will know she's not your wife Good point :D Seriously though, if you stumble in with an obvious tart in tow and a silly grin on your face, the hotel porters will sense the opportunity for a payoff. Walk in with a touch of attitude and a serious expression. If...

Re: Guest Friendly Hotels

I have had some mates that have stayed in Jings Jings has now relocated out of town although they do still control some rooms in the centre. What was Jings is now called the Mermaid, but it is strangely difficult to book rooms there - they don't seem to have a website and the likes of booking.com h...

Re: Swede dies in accident in Hua Hin

I've spent most of my adult career working with explosives, so probably have a better take on real-time safety than most people.. Good safety is not borne of pedantic bureaucracy, box ticking or arse covering fifty page risk assessments that no-one finds the time to read. Safety comes down to good p...

Re: Swede dies in accident in Hua Hin

Tragic.. Somehow I feel more for the taxi driver and less for his passenger. The taxi driver was earning an honest crust and probably leaves behind a wife and family who were reliant on his modest earnings. The Swedish guy, at the age of 68, and from the most nannied state on the planet, elects to r...

Re: V bar Soi Selekam ladydrinks

When it comes to bars, the the winners are those who know their target clientele and go the extra mile to make them feel at home. - Panama works because it appeals to relatively affluent younger guys enjoying a short vacation before embarking on the long grind of marital bliss. - The Romantic works ...

Re: V bar Soi Selekam ladydrinks

Bar is for sale - but aren't most of them? No. But those that are, mostly fall into the same category - dull, characterless boxes with no unique selling point. They are mostly bought by farangs who think it gives them kudos to be able to tell their friends back home that they 'own a bar in Thailand...

Re: V bar Soi Selekam ladydrinks

Does V Bar still exist, what's the status in 2016 Dunno, but will know when I return in Jan. That property has been the death of so many business ventures, I'd actually be quite surprised if it was still there. When I was last in town it had few customers and few girls, and aside from one innocent ...

Re: GBP vs THB

I have to make a decision on whether to change a large lump of GBP into THB in the next month or a series of small lumps over the next three months. Changing a big lump results in lower charges, but it would be a bummer if sterling then rebounded.. It's a hard call.. The markets always trade on anti...
