Nothing is 100 percnt safe. It is foolish to say something is totally safe. I find sweeteners not pleasant mainly because they are sweet. I do not like sugar either. In England you can buy a tonic concentrate which you can mix with soda.
Perhaps you can get a friend to bring you some.
Sweeteners are not very pleasant but despite Prtofessor Plum's phobia they are quite safe.
The best solution is to wean yourself off a liking for sweet tastes.
