Re: Life in Thailand: Battling Boredom

Well, given that you are fluent in Thai, why not try Latin... :thumb: Oh. Not fluent? Well, there's a radical idea. Given that you live in Thailand and all that! I spend a lot of my time doing online MOOCs (http://www.mooc-list.com). I'm just finishing up the science of food (H...

Re: Farang buying a house with a Thai lady

So net-net, if you discount the rent against the value of the house as it was 14 years ago at 100% you have a 2.84% compounded rate of return on the capital employed. Adding the rent back in brings it to 3.88% (assuming rounding on all figures, and that you didn't have any debt to service). It's OK,...

Re: Farang buying a house with a Thai lady

What a novel idea. So how many people do you think manage to profit on selling used houses, over a period of say a decade given the continuous building that is going of, versus the opportunity cost of tying your capital up in an illiquid asset in a foreign currency? I'd really be quite interested to...

Anatolli - you may also be interested in Fucoxanthin, which is from the same family of compounds and usually sourced from brown seaweed.

Re: Ao Manao/Wing 5 Golf

I am in Hua Hin and have played every course in the area at least once, including Dtanarat.

I like Prachuab and have visited Ao Manao itself but not the course - it is helpful for knowing whether dragging the clubs down there next time is worth the effort. Thanks.

Good info - thanks. Is that the only course you played there? Are there alternatives?

Re: Residence letter on a tourist visa?

I just renewed at Cha-Am today. I got a 1 year renewal on a tourist visa. The lady apologised that they couldn't give me a 5 year but was quite adamant that they couldn't. Tourist visas get 1 year; 1 year visas (non-imm) get 5 year. Not sure whether the sign you saw means that you cannot get a licen...

Re: Thailand tourist slump continues

You didn't need to wait out in the heat you know...there is a nice air con waiting room. Which had been closed one and a half hours by the time I got my letter. The girls in the processing room instructed us to sit outside - which we did (about 10 people). I am not entirely sure they come into the ...

Re: Thailand tourist slump continues

the average tourist comes for what, 2/3 weeks at best While that is true, a large part of the news-feed does come from the experiences of expat communities, and those experiences occasionally hit the media just as hard as the happenings on Koh Tao. All expats started out as tourists to a greater or...

Re: Thailand tourist slump continues

Don't know about that - those with money might be more likely to de-camp to Thailand! And, I guess I could get interested in a 17% coupon - Russian Bond Funds, anybody :-) In many respects I am with pdm3547 though. I just had a similar experience at Imm. Waiting 4 hours outside in the heat to pay $2...

I've never been stopped in Bangkok at either airport, since I first arrived in 1994.

Re: Customs shakedown at the airport

I have to say that I prefer that, sort of. At least it is suitably random. Since I tend to travel a lot alone, and am usually carrying quite an amount of kit (cameras, electronics), I get pretty sick of the lame excuses when any number of people in the queue would be a higher risk than me. Profiling...
