Re: Thais rank low again at English

I am constantly amazed by the fact that most of the bar girls speak and understand English better than the staff in my bank. That's because of what is termed as language exposure...which most high school students and uni students don't get. They (bar girls) are more exposed tot he language and are ...

Re: Thais rank low again at English

Turning university into actually university would help too, instead of a further extension of high school where little appears to be really different...maybe they should call it mathayom 7 & 8. Thing is, buy the time they get to being freshers at uni, they have spent at least 13 years learning Engli...

Re: The computer and software security thread

There is no such thing as computer security, only thing you can do is lengthen the odds as to whether you will be compromised by the scumbags.

Re: One tourist killed, 11 injured in speed boat explosion

Must have been a big speed boat if it was certified to carry 31 people on it safely. Surprised the overloaded thing hasn't been brought up a long with greed over safety.

Re: Thais rank low again at English

I speak Thai better than most of the students I come across can speak English...tbh. The reason is, is because I've had a motivation to do so. Most of these kids have had no such thing interjected into their life in a meaningful way as high school is a ludicrous brainwashing experience where within ...

Re: Dutchman arrested in Hua Hin for alleged child sex abuse

I remember when I used to drink in the city at night time where I live and you'd see the Thai guys picking up their girlfriends from the soapy massage parlour across the street at closing time from the watering hole which was open late. Always wondered how they must feel picking them up with their e...

Re: Farang buying a house with a Thai lady

If you are in a stable marriage, have some spare baht to gamble/invest in your futures, then why not take a chance and buy a house together. I have already accepted that the house we live in belongs to my wife and I simply pay the monthly mortgage, better to pay her than some faceless landlord their...

Re: Some Thais' perception of foreigners

Unfortunately, by the time they get to university it's usually too late and there isn't much you can do to realistically help a fair % of them in an 11 week course (or whatever it is), sink or swim really. By this stage they are either lost or still with a lingering possibility of being slightly sti...

Re: 2017 Poppy Appeal

Modern people understand nothing of poetry and fail miserably to realise the horrors of this whole event. The lessons of the past are fading, which is bad news.

Re: Understanding Thai society and behaviour

Empathy means you understand an emotion/feeling and feel it too. Haha...yeah, which they don't. And also can be applied regarding how if they did have an ounce of empathy they might realise how these emotions might make others feel or how their 'me first' actions affect the emotions of others in th...

Re: Understanding Thai society and behaviour

Not just the selfish "me first" thing, I also often sense a disproportionately large empathy with others deficit on an individual level...to a point where people are not even aware that what they are doing is unacceptable behaviour.

Re: The scourge of Facebook

Well, the locals are some of the biggest believers in Farcebook...so the chief of social brainwashing is coming to meet the dictator. There will be a closet deal on something mutually beneficial despite the denials. What possibly could they have to talk about other than increasing business/access et...

As an aside, if I ever do something wrong here, it'll be interesting to see how far a wai and 500 baht get me
