Re: HILTON up in smoke??
Could be where their backup generators are located. The old diesel powered units let off a belch of black smoke for a minute or two when started up. Has there been power outages recently? Pete

Re: Dirty municipal water
By large particle I meant substances that make your water brown...sand, mud, dissolved dirt etc., that get into the water system. It's good for just about anything like that, but not down to the bacteria or chemical level. The filter inside looks like a large roll of fax paper with fins and baffles....

Re: The Thailand Photo Thread
I was going to put this in the "Birds of Thailand" thread as it was big enough to be a bird. Chomping off small bits of crab and taking back to its nest. It came back again and again for 15 minutes taking a small piece each time. Pete  EDIT: Taken with an IPhone camera. Ima...

Re: thermometers
Test whatever you get. Apparently they're not made with mercury any longer. Whatever the substance is in there it sometimes does not work. I got a supposedly reputable brand from True Value and it won't go above 30C even in the sun. It won't go below 20C even in the frig. Bloody junk. Perhap...

Here's the thread I mentioned before: http://www.huahinforum.com/viewtopic.php?f=10&t=17506&p=206096&hilit=Water+Filter#p206096 These Mazuma filters don't require near the work or expense once installed that Pete mentioned above. We've had ours for six years and all I've done is back wa...

Re: Dirty municipal water
Here is a typical large particle filter which will remove particles and most of the brown in your water. Place in line between your meter and tank, or meter and house if direct water feed. Cost about 4,000 with filter, and new filters about 1,200. A filter will last a year unless your water is from ...

Re: Decent ovens
Here's a gas canister good for cooking with gas outside if the need arises for something like stir-fry, deep fried fish etc. Anything where you need fast, high heat and it's messy cooking. The unit costs about 600-700 and of course you can remove the burner and pot stand when the gas is empty. A new...

Re: Decent ovens
I don't know that if in the long run you'll want to keep it. Electricity is dear here, and going up all the time. Our oven is electric and I watch the meter spin when cooking a roast. The top burners are gas and a 300 Baht bottle will last us 3-4 months. Anyway, to each is own but you're in a good p...

Day and Night, black and white....both understandable in meaning. Why would someone think up the use of "chalk and cheese" to convey the same thought? Tis strange mates, but I'm sure there's a story behind it. Pete

Re: Typically British...
Why don't we start on unique British sayings/idioms. I was watching Top Gear the other night and the presenter commented that the grill of the Land Rover is "too Cheshire". I have no idea what he meant unless referring to the smile of the Cheshire cat in Alice in Wonderland. :laugh...
