Re: Things that really shocked you about Thailand
Bum Guns love em all i use now a days, much more sanitary wish every country used them... I'm still not really sure how to use 'em, but I know I hate sitting down on a toilet seat and discovering its all wet from the previous 'washer' What continues to shock me, though, is the contrast between budd...

You guys just don't know how to enjoy cold weather. :neener: ...as I don't know how to enjoy hot weather. You've been away too long. My winter still has bone chilling, shivering cold with the requirement to buy new winter coats for everyone and the nasty salt powder from the roads that gets o...

Re: 63 DAYS TO GO TILL MY RETIREMENT! - D-DAY HH 2012-06-27!
Congrats Big Boy, you're almost there. Question for Mike and Big Boy, Do you speak Thai? My Thai is very mediocre and I keep telling myself to try harder to learn it before I move there permanently. Maybe even learn to read, but I can't ever manage to find the time or energy. I'm sure it'll be easie...

Re: Your solutions on 3 million baht to find longevity here
If it could be done on 3 million baht, or even 6 million, then Thailand would be very crowded with foeigners, which would likely take away much of the appeal of moving there in the first place. After years of dreaming and pondering the same question as the OP, I can only agree with most posters that...

Re: Shinawatra family to build houses and condos in Hua Hin
I don't know where these projects are to be located, but there are two other projects planned south of Cha-am on either side of the Krisida condo. Both projects (The Energy and Issara United) advertise themselves as Hua Hin even though they are clearly in Petchburi and officially Cha-am. Maybe they ...

Re: Tap water
We've always used bottles suitable for re-using. When empty, we wash and air dry. HH, you're right, we should periodically boil the bottles or soak in bleach solution. Still won't matter though if the machines dispense contaminated water.

Re: Tap water
I've used the vending machines that dispense alleged filtered and UV zapped water into bottles you provide. It's much cheaper than store bought water, but I wonder about the quality and safety. We've never had a problem, but I doubt there is any oversight or contols on calibrating or maintaining the...

I've never been hit on at Power Buy, but then again, most of the staff are male. Power Buy stores in Bangkok are pretty good. They do have an agenda to sell certain featured brands, but get past that and they seem to know at least a little about their products and aren't afraid to wait on farangs. H...

Rice is good for about a week in the fridge. Add a few drops of water
and microwave... Good as freshly cooked.

Re: Take a deep breath, smile, pay up, walk away and stay al
I'm sure most of us feel the same about not trusting Thai contractors ( I have the same feeling in the US, but to a lesser degree). Part of the problem is they don't trust us either. Many Thai blue-collar types consider farangs as rich a-holes. Unfortunately too many farangs actually are, and perpet...

Re: Burma
It does seem that the pace of change is extraordinary, but I've no idea why. It could be very hazardous for Thailand though as labor is much cheaper and the floods have left many factories in Thailand re-evaluating their plans. Also, there has been negligable tourism in Burma, yet they have an extre...

Re: Do you get that look(Dirty sexpat )?
I kinda agree with the preconceived notions and dirty looks (not to you TTJohn). The old fat 'sex tourists' with cute young bar girls is not very attactive in any eyes except the 'lucky' guys. The looks should be expected to all of us with Thai gigs/wives especially if they're younger. The look will...

HHF, with a list like that, what could possibly make you choose to live in LOS. Whoops, I see... only one major item missing from your list.

Re: Squat Toilets gotta love em(not)
If you have any Thai women in your extended family here, over 60, take a look at their knees when the opportunity arises. All of them have knees the size of melons that I attribute to decades of squat toilet use, and their habit of squatting to do just about everything that us westerners would do o...
