Re: Money exchange

I bought traveler's cheques yesterday and the bank lady asked why I would do this, seems they are not that popular any more. Well, I don't like using a foreign bank card and paying at both ends. If the card is lost or stolen everything goes to hell, eggs in one basket etc. And my bank has no offices...

Re: Travel insurance for USA

Be prepared for the insurance to be expensive, the US has insanely high medical costs. An overnight in a hospital with a few tests can run $10,000. Insurance companies don't like this and charge accordingly. Seniors going to the US will also pay more.

Re: Thailand to rethink exempt visa fees for tourists

Thailand has a worldwide brand and mystique that Malaysia and others don't have, as well Malaysia labours under the label of being Muslim. Not to mention sanuk is in short supply there. In the end I suspect Thailand's brand can absorb it.

I may be mistaken but don't they all travel under a UK passport? Thai officials may not be aware of the distinctions within GB.

Re: Thailand to rethink exempt visa fees for tourists

Maybe they will just fold it into ticket prices like they did with the departure tax. Few would notice it when it's part of a ticket costing 30K baht or more. As for bumping up the various longer-stay costs, I think it's clear they don't really care about a few 000 expats. Bottom...

Re: HOW MUCH DOWRY DO I PAY

Visit the home with eyes open, you can usually read a family that sees their daughter as a chattel to be sold. Being naive and romantic can be expensive.

If she comes from the middle class and has a proper job, nothing.
If she comes from the rice fields and worked bar, nothing.
If the family wants you to buy her, walk.

Oakland-Miami is pretty lame. They need to show Seattle-San Francisco or Baltimore-Pittsburgh, two great smashmouth rivalries.

Re: Memorable incidents during your time in Thailand

Back about 2004 I was heading home from the old Don Muang airport and the 500 baht cash departure tax was still i effect. I had about 20 baht in my pocket and got turned away at the entry to the gates. The lady would not budge and suggested I talk with the airline. I went to the EVA Air counter and ...

Re: No original music bands anymore

It's happened before. The early days of rock 'n' roll with great original artists like Elvis, Little Richard, Carl Perkins, Jerry Lee Lewis gave way to corporate control with manufactured "artists" like Frankie Avalon, Fabian and others. Pure pap. The Beatles restored independent singer-so...
