Re: Speed Cameras/Speed Limits
I think the fines get compounded if they are left unpaid for more than a week. This comes from our company driver who has been in that situation before. Do note, however, that he had been issued a ticket and his driving licence was kept. He had to pay the fine (plus interest) at the station from whi...

Re: Nissan X-Trail
Pete, we had a Chevy Captiva as a company car - I found it a bit ponderous and a little on the large side. Sort of almost Fortuner size. The bloke who used it most of the time did say he wouldn't buy one for himself when he went back home. I find the X-trail size just nice for a mix of city and coun...

Re: Nissan X-Trail
Yes, only the 2.0 front-wheel drive with CVT is available new. That is why I had to buy secondhand as I wanted the 4WD capability. It is still a very nice car, and if you don't stray too far off the beaten track you can't really go wrong with it. P.S. The instrument binnacle moves back to the 'norma...

Re: Nissan X-Trail
Yes, Pete, I have one. It's a 2006 model and I've been driving it for around two years now. Love it to bits. It's a front-wheel drive with selectable part-time electronic 4WD. I believe the unit was lifted from the GT-R and put back to front. As it is car-based it drives very well, the guy who does ...

Re: Vehicle GPS
I used a cheap Chinese unit with Naviextras as well and it was okay until I needed a map upgrade and the battery started playing up. Thought it would be cheaper to get a replacement so a friend's son inherited the old unit. I then tried Sygic loaded on my Galaxy S2 and surprise, surprise... it worke...

Also note that the different companies operate on different frequencies, so you may have to buy your handset from that particular service provider you've decided on. A side note: True seems to have the widest coverage to include Wifi so I have jumped from DTAC. Quite happy with the service as is, bu...

Re: Reliable Ford Dealers
Oh, how I wish somebody had warned me about how useless Ford are before I'd bought the car. BB, I hinted at the level of service on page 2 of 'Which pickup truck?', Quote: "The Ranger certainly looks tempting. Saw one on the road yesterday with red plates. Would be worth it if Ford have improv...

Re: Govt health plans for foreigners under review
What a load of rubbish. As an employee of any company, you are required to contribute a certain percentage of your pay to the Social Security Fund. You are given a card which you can use at the hospital of your choice under that program. I have used it without any problems. I was also able to claim ...

Doubt If you' ll get a full body safety harness, but the belt with a short rope and hook is fairly easy to find. From memory, the full body harness is a special order.

if you really need a car for the couple of months you're here, why not look into a long-term rental? That would at least give you the option of a set of wheels that is not falling apart, and solves the insurance hassles as well.

Re: New Year to see end of 91-octane petrol
Buksi the yellow 'benzine 95' was (almost) forced out in a similar crusade - stations selling this grade were threatened with severe penalties if caught. It wasn't just a 'we're taking it off the market' thing at the time. It still seems silly in that you can still get 98 octane petrol in Singapore,...

I'm assuming that this is going to be the case for all cars registered after the proposed implementation date? If they decide to do a blanket scheme that will affect all cars on the road no matter when they were registered I don't even want to think about the ensuing chaos...

Re: Pattaya Police Shoot At Drunken Dane's Truck
1. If you're going to drink, make alternative transport arrangements. The penalty for drunk driving in Thailand isn't a slap on the wrist any more. The Dane was fleeing an accident, and drove through a police checkpoint. I would assume they found out he was drunk later, rather than sooner. He was lu...

Re: What age to give your kids mobile phones?
Buksi the eldest was given one when in ม.3, so he would have been about 15 then. The younger was given one when in ม.1, so about 13. Note that this was way back when mobile phones were just that; no fancy gadgets. The reason being they had to be using public transport in Bangkok and were required to...
