The culture is different, as is the tax structure and your retirement safety net..

Re: Internet dependency
Unfortunately many retail places now also expect you to have a connected phone, and fit that to happen you need an ISP. Even at the height of CoVid you were expected to have an app to do anything of go anywhere. The digital age is also the age where no permanence exists any more; I still have some s...

Re: Upcoming general election fundamentally flawed: Human Rights Watch
I was here when they had the 'walkthrough' in 1992; my SIL remembers the really bad one before that and the contention is that the reported casualties and the actual numbers are totally out of whack.

Re: The AI (artificial intelligence) thread
I don't disagree. Computers have invaded practically everything; there are about 50 microprocessors in your average car and you need a deep understanding of the CANBus systems along with the standard internal combustion engine, now hybrids and such - even the mechanics at the dealerships are lost. I...

Re: The AI (artificial intelligence) thread
Well, considering how long the spell check function has been around, and how infuriating it can be at times, is AI really going to improve things all that much?

Re: Thai passport renewal ... 10 years?
I was under the impression that any passport needed to have a minimum of six months validity remaining before travel? The airlines might not even let you get on a plane if you have an expired passport.

The genie is out of the bottle and they are going to have a hard time getting it back in, if ever. And what about the other elephant in the room, the kratom plant? Everyone has a plant or three in their garden (of both) and it is not going to die a sudden death.. Or be put to bed, so to speak.

Re: Phone charger destroys car
Looks like one of those Hyundai people mover vans popular with hisos. I very much doubt a phone charger would start a fire; most vehicles will have a USB port somewhere to plug your cable into. Many of these will be customized and have additional wiring and/or systems. Hyundai also did have a recall...

Re: Fluoride in drinking water
Fluoride is a highly toxic waste product of certain manufacturing processes including the nuclear industry. They had a problem of how to dispose of this waste until they convinced the public that fluoride is actually good for you. Not. I always look for toothpaste with zero fluoride content and avoi...

Re: Hua Hin Then and Now Comparison
Unlike most of you, I'd fit into the Bangkok weekender crowd.. Got my first car circa 1992 and remember parking it at the Melia. The furthest out of town we stayed was that the Dusit, but I did like the Hin Suay Nam Sai place, the kids and extended family spent at lot of time at the pool. Closer int...

Re: House Bricks
Unfortunately, Nereus is right. You cannot get what we consider a 'standard' brick here, and I do understand your inference to a Mars bar for what is available as it is not far from the truth. Nobody uses bricks any more given that there are more viable construction methods these days. Though my old...
