Re: Visa runs banned after Aug 12

Sure - 3 months - but the same amount needs to be there waiting for the next year. I have more than that in my Thai account now - but I prefer not to get into the retiree visa routine unless I am left with no alternative. So far, the embassy has given me an alternative. That alternative is what I ex...

Re: Visa runs banned after Aug 12

My concern, ironically, is exactly this kind of thing -dumping €20k in a bank account, which I cannot touch (because it needs to be there for the next years visa qualification), and then having the rules change under me and have problems regaining control over it (getting it back into Euro, £, $). I...

Re: Visa runs banned after Aug 12

I have used funds in a Euro denominated account (in a European bank, with no branches in Thailand) on 2 occasions. I printed out the statement and then wrote on it (with black felt tip), the exchange rate on a given date (€/B), and what the credit value amounted to in Baht. (ie, 25 Dec 2012 @ €/Baht...

Re: Visa runs banned after Aug 12

^ I am over 50 now, but I don't bother with retiree for the simple fact that I do not want to keep that amount of cash in baht. So far it hasn't been a problem. Maybe this year they will make me change - who can say. I started out with ED's when I was 47. The only problem is that I cannot do interna...

Re: Visa runs banned after Aug 12

I also feel that there is a suspicion in the farang community that this is targeting them / us. It seems from what I have read, that the main target is peripheral nations (Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam and Malaysia) and perhaps to a lesser extent India and Gulf nations. Unfortunately, and as usual, the Th...

Re: Visa runs banned after Aug 12

2 points: I have an 'O' visa for which Immigration tells me I cannot do internal reporting. I must exit and return. No issue with that, and it is a correctly issues 'O' - not a tourist visa. But since back to back in/out visa runs will effectively be banned does that not directly contradict the term...

Re: Presents for thai ladies

This sounds awfully similar to the Thai men who drink 'expensive' whisky - by the thimbleful, and drowned with coke and ice. Are you sure that what they are asking for by using the term 'expensive' isn't simply the cachet of brand ownership bragging rights? My feeling is you would be wasting your mo...

Re: Missing girl on train found dead, raped

Hang on - one lady that the perp claims to have raped, has gone on record to say it was consensual? Now that is all f**ked up!

Re: Missing girl on train found dead, raped

While I am usually implacably opposed to the death penalty, this case is a pretty much slam dunk example of where it would be justified! Horrific.

Re: Married Men Doing Grocery Shopping

^^ Because people get used to zeroing in on the things they know they need. Switching things around increases footfall as people pass unfamiliar product to find the stuff they want. It (allegedly) increases the chances of you buying other stuff, on impulse, thru serendipity, or any other marketing-i...

Re: why do you rarely see sailing boats on the sea in Hua Hi

I think I will wait until you are well underway and I have had some time to see how the dust settles, so to speak, before committing myself either way. I will bear it in mind - thanks - though at the moment, I guess I would lean toward sole ownership, unless it was a 'leaseback' type of arrangement.

Re: Cafe staffer washed shoe in sink

I think the toilet paper thing in Asia is more based around the idea that one uses it to 'dry up' after washing with the butt-gun or using the water scoop found in older loos. Which, IMO is a good idea / habit / policy. Of course, public toilets don't always have a butt-gun, which leaves you either ...

Re: Married Men Doing Grocery Shopping

Whether single or not, I do the shopping. I have never found a S.O. that can be trusted to do it! Like big-kev, I find it really quite therapeutic and quite resent anyone interrupting my reveries over the pasta sauce with prodding about the dull realities of toilet paper. I have learned through expe...
