Early winter as mercury drops on Doi Inthanon

The temperature on top of Doi Inthanon, Thailand’s highest mountain and a popular tourist destination, fell to 10 degrees Celsius on Saturday morning, signalling an early winter for the Northern province of Chiang Mai, a park official said.

Rung Hiranwong, chief of the Doi Inthanon National Park in Chiang Mai’s Chom Thong district, said it was the temperature plunged three degrees Saturday morning fron 13 to 10 degrees compared to Friday morning. He said the temperature at the Kiew Mae Pan lookout of the park was 11 Celsius degree in the morning. “This was the sign that the winter has arrived,” Rung added.

Prepare for rainy week, central provinces told

http://www.bangkokpost.com/news/general ... recent_box

Residents of 10 lower Central Plains provinces have been warned to brace for heavy rain from today until Thursday, and for high sea tides that may trigger river overflows and floods in low-lying areas on Oct 9 and 10.

Chatchai Promlert, director-general of the Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Department, on Saturday asked department staff in the 10 provinces to remain extra alert and warn residents about possible river overflows and flooding.

The 10 provinces and at-risk districts are Chai Nat (Manorom, Muang and Sapphaya districts); Sing Buri (In Buri, Bang Rachan, Muang, Khai Bang Rachan and Phrom Buri); Ang Thong (Muang and Pa Mok); Lop Buri (Chai Badan, Phattana Nikhom and Tha Wung); Saraburi (Wang Muang, Kaeng Khoi, Muang and Sao Hai); Ayutthaya (Maha Rat, Tha Rua, Nakhon Luang, Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya, Phak Hai, Sena, Bang Sai and Ban Pa-in); Suphan Buri (Doembang Nangbuat, Sam Chuk, Si Prachan, Muang, Bang Pla Ma and Song Phi Nong); Pathum Thani (Muang and Sam Khok); Nonthaburi (Muang and Pak Kret); and Samut Prakan (Phra Pradaeng and Phra Samut Chedi).

In Samut Prakan, flooding triggered by hours of heavy downpours on Friday night ravaged many areas in Muang district. Several main roads were under 20-30 centimetres of water. A section of Sukhumvit Road at the Phuchao Saming Prai intersection was still inundated on Saturday morning. Small vehicles passing through the area moved slowly, causing traffic congestion.

Water pumps were deployed to drain the affected areas and conditions were expected to improve in the afternoon.

In Trang, flash floods hit five districts from Friday night until Saturday morning. Continuous heavy rain pounded Muang, Kantang, Yan Ta Khao, Palian and Na Yong districts, causing widespread flooding in many areas of the southern province.

Although that rain has now stopped, shops, houses and many roads remained inundated on Saturday morning. Large areas of farmland were damaged.

In Muang district, runoff from Champa mountain flooded northern and eastern areas of Trang. Many residents were caught off-guard by sudden floods as the areas had not experienced flooding before. Roads including Ploenpitak, Wichetkul and Tha Klang were under 50cm of water.

I usually ask the guard in our compound, whatever he says, I prepare for the opposite.

Had some good steady rain for the last 20 minutes or so from the west, getting heavier now but not torrential. Black Mountain covered in mist. High cloud, 8/8 cover, it might be in for the afternoon. :)

Oh, and 2 hours ago the guard did say 'no rain today'.

Sigh. It's been raining every day here in Laksi; the khlong that runs through our moobahn is full to the brim and my house gets flooded to about 4" each time. Fortunately it *does* go down, now only about an inch at the side of the house. One hopes the runoff from the North has time to ease off before it gets here; remember watching in trepidation back in 2011 as it made it's way down past Pitsanulok, Ayudthaya, then Sapan Mai before indunating Laksi. Pathum Thani was under more than a meter of water by then.

The house ended up being under more than a meter of water for three months :|

^ ^ You're not alone. Nothing but drizzle over on the east side as well. Rule of thumb seems to be not to believe anything they warn about, but be very afraid when they forecast nothing as we'll probably get a typhoon. Pete

The South West monsoon is in its dying stages, and will soon swing around to the North East. The transition usually sees a confused weather pattern for a few weeks until the NE Monsoon strengthens.
