Yes, it came headed by the mandatory power outage, and a vast drop in temperature. The really heavy stuff only lasted a few minutes, but steady rainfall now. Rumbles of thunder in the distance.

HUGE storm in Bangkok. The Chao Phraya River has burst its banks and the MRT is flooded. The General said it would have been no problem if the naysayers would just approve the purchase of the submarines. :banghead:

We are getting absolutely killed over here on the south coast. I've seldom seen rain like this so hard and for so long. We're going to be counting in 1/2 meters soon instead of centimeters. I'll post any video, photos or whatever that is available later, if we survive. Not joking, we've gotten at least a month's rain in the last 2 hours. Scuba Pete

Rainy season not expected until mid-May

http://www.bangkokpost.com/news/general ... il-mid-may

The wet season could begin around the middle of May, depending on when an expected low pressure wedge forms in the Bay of Bengal, according to Pramote Onnom, director of the meteorological station in Chai Nat province

The forecast comes with farmers in many provinces of the Central Region suffering from lack of water and facing heavy losses as thousands of rai of crops wither and die, according to local media.

Mr Pramote said the water level behind the Chao Phraya Dam in Chai Nat was now very low, and sand dunes have emerged over a large area.

Preecha Phanwa, chief of the Ang Thong irrigation office, said billboards were erected at many places in the province, warning farmers to think twice before planting a second rice crop, because they risked losing it all.

Farmers were advised to wait until late May, he said.

In Pathum Thani, water in many canals is now very low, particularly in Khlong Rahaeng Tai in tambon Na Mai of Lat Lum Kaew district.

A large number of farms rely on water supplied along this canal for their crops.

The synoptic charts show a very confused patterns to the south and east. The monsoon will need to swing around to the south west before any substantial rain can be expected. Also, the Inter Tropic Convergence Zone seems to be more confused than normal!

Thailand to host two Equinoxes this year:
................................................................................
Equinox to heat up Bangkok on Thursday

http://www.bangkokpost.com/news/general ... n-Thursday

People in Bangkok could face a scorcher of a day on Thursday, with the sun directly over head around noon.

The National Astronomical Research Institute of Thailand said on Monday the summer equinox in Bangkok will occur at 12.16pm on Thursday. With the sun immediately overhead, people standing outside will cast very little shadow.

Potentially, with the sun's rays striking directly down, it could also be the hottest day of the year in the capital city, the institute said.

However, temperatures also depend on other factors, including clouds and rain, institute deputy director Sarun Posayachinda said, so it might not be all that bad.

The Meteorological Department forecasts a maximum temperature in Bangkok from Wednesday to Saturday of 39°C, about 2°C above average.

The hottest days in Bangkok so far were last Friday and Saturday, when the mercury rose to 38°C, according to accuweather.com, which tracks temperatures around the globe.

People in Betong district in Yala were the first to see the sun directly above them on this pass northwards, at 12.19pm on April 5 . Residents of Mae Sai district in Chiang Rai will be the last, at 12.17pm on May 19.

Mae Sai is the northernmost district and Betong is the southernmost in the country.

The next equinox in Bangkok, as the sun heads south again, will be at 12.24pm on Aug 16.

Equinox is the wrong word. It doesn't refer to the sun being overhead. It literally means equal length day and night. Equinoxes happen in March and September.

The Meteorological Department on Thursday issued a warning for residents of many provinces in the North, Northeast, East and Central to brace themselves for possible thunderstorms between Thursday and Saturday.

The warning was issued at 5am on Thursday.

The department said the storms would be caused by a high pressure ridge that is expected to cover the Northeast of Thailand and the South China Sea by Thursday and is expected to last until Saturday while outbreaks of hot spells are still expected at many parts in the country.

The department said thunderstorms with heavy rains and possible hails are expected on Thursday in the eastern side of the North (Phayao, Phrae, Nan, Uttaradit, Phitsanulok and Phetchabun), the Northeast (Loei, Nong Bua Lam Phu, Udon Thani, Nong Khai, Bueng Kan, Sakon Nakhon, Nakhon Phanom, Mukdahan, Kalasin, Amnat Charoen, Ubon Ratchathani, Si Sa Ket, Surin, Buri Ram and Nakhon Ratchasima), and the East (Prachin Buri, Sa Kaeo, Chonburi, Rayong, Chantaburi and Trat).

On Friday and Saturday, more thunderstorms are expected in the North (Mae Hong Son, Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Lamphun, Lampang, Tak, Kamphaengphet, Phichit, Sukhothai, Phitsanulok and Phetchabun), the Northeast (Loei, Chaiyaphum, Khon Kaen, Maha Sarakham, Roi Et, Si Sa Ket, Surin, Buri Ram and Nakhon Ratchasima), the East (Nakhon Nayok, Prachin Buri, Sa Kaeo, Chachoengsao, Chon Buri, Rayong, Chantaburi and Trat), and the Central (Lop Buri, Saraburi, Nakhon Sawan, Uthai Thani, Kanchanaburi, Suphan Buri and Ratchaburi) including Bangkok and its vicinity.

This satellite image is great if you see it soon enough after this posting (1730 hours). Not often you see storms growing out of nothing, and a lot of them. Pete

Wow!!! This is a good one. Woke up to power cut, driving rain, thunder, and 3 shaking dogs desperate toget inside the house.

Market Village have put out a warning (in Thai) about the roads towards the Palace. I'll be taking my son to work soon out that way, so I'll report back if there's anything more than flooding.

It's everywhere this morning. The satellite loop looks like fireworks going off with all the thunderstorms. They say it's going to keep up for a few days. Pete

The problems reported by Market Village are down to Hua Hin's finest. They've bollarded (is that a word  ) off the left hand lane travelling North through the city because of a couple of inches of water. Many Thais were removing them to open up the road, so hopefully the chaos will subside.

Worst stretch of flooding was Naebkehardt Road between Soi 55 and 51.

Be careful, many motorcyclists are adopting a 'Songkran' attitude and doing some crazy things. I'm glad my dash cams were on, even though I didn't need them.
