Post Office EMS

Post by Piesat42 »

I moved house on Monday so sent myself an EMS letter on Wednesday from the counter in Market Village it arrived today ... all sounds good? Well it would have been if I had realised there was no mail box outside the house :( No problem the guy cunningly left a card on the floor in the road outside T.I.T.
My mind wandered and never came back :(

I thought they'd just throw it in the general direction of the house like the old school Paper Boy game so you've done well.

I had a package delivered that came in a large manila envelope that wouldn't fit in the slot in my mailbox so they just threw it through the gate onto the driveway. I almost ran over it and a couple of hours later it would have gotten soaked with rain. It contained a new MP3 player I ordered from outside the country!
My brain is like an Internet browser; 12 tabs are open and 5 of them are not responding, there's a GIF playing in an endless loop,... and where is that annoying music coming from?

Postal Delivery in Hua Hin

Post by Big Boy »

Many of us have complained or commented on this forum about the reliability of the postal service in Hua Hin (and Thailand generally).

I don't know how typical my road is, but we were allocated our house number today - my house is a new build amongst other houses up to 6 years old. Our number is 10/432. Wondering how this fitted in with the other houses in my road, I looked at the numbering system of a few neighbours just now.

If you turn right out of my front gate, the numbering is 20/176, 10/229, 7/53 and 10/383.

If you turn left out of my front gate the numbering is 541/55, 7/54 and 7/55 (yes, actually 2 numbers running in sequence).

So, my questions to you are:

- Is there any logic in Thai house numbering? If so, how does it work?

- Is my street typical?

- How does the Post Office make any sense of postal addresses?

Looking at the above numbering, I now have every sympathy with the local post office.

Not sure how they may do it in Hua Hin, but many years ago in Bangkok it was explained away because of the original numbering system of large blocks of land, ie: number xxx. If a developer came along and split it up into smaller lots then the first lot would become xxx/1, the next xxx/2 but it may be down the other end of the Soi, but it was the next lot registered, so got the next number as it was registered first.

Some of those lots may be a different area and get split up again some time later. Again, the first lot to be split off would get the next consecutive number, while still retaining the base number, and the next one, although it may be a different developer / owner, the next number issued would just follow on from the first, regardless of its location, but still part of the original lot number.

And then you come to the house numbers! Thai logic, do not try and work it out!

You should place a mailbox in front of your house. Even if you change your location then it will be also easy for you to install the mailbox to another place.

I was told that the first digits before the forward stroke are the "village" no. and those following the house no. Mind you BB's comments seem to place a big ? over that..

The first numbers seems to be the postal district rather than the actual Soi no.
The second set of numers appears to be the plot no. Our estate may be like yours where they only allocate a number when a plot has been sold resulting in there seeming to be no logic at all in the system once all the plots have been sold.

The postmen are actually pretty competent in finding addresses even if the addresses on the front of the letter are ambiguous....and despite them being generally in a bad or hurried mood when you actually have chance to talk to them, they know their stuff or area.
You should place a mailbox in front of your house. Even if you change your location then it will be also easy for you to install the mailbox to another place.
Well, that would fall into the obvious section of action.

Yes, there is logic. Thai logic. Not for westeners to understand.

The first number is the block number.
The second number is the house and these are allocated in order of registering at the Tessabahn. Not much help for the postmen I fear.

OK, not trying to be anti-whatever nationality, but could you please explain 'block number'? Does that fit into the scenario I quoted from my road please?

Not sure how the block is defined albeit that is a particular area. In a moo bahn all houses will have the same block number. Usually each soi has the same block number.
Some years ago there was an intention to change all house numbers for the whole of Thailand to conform with consecutive numbers as in other countries. It was to start in Bangkok. Small areas of Bangkok were renumbered accordingly but progress in that direction seems to have come to a standstill.

Mmmm. Just looking at the examples BB gave of his neighbours which confuses me. The Tessabahn have told me that the first number is a block number and is a 'block' of houses! However BB's neighbours seem to contradict that.
