But what I can offer is this:

A blog-style site with a picture a day or week to expose the beach and other pollution in such a tourist place as Hua Hin and others.

Just had this idea the other day, too late for this "dirt season" as I'm now mostly in Bangkok where things improved much over the years.

But with a site, by at the same time declaring love and concern for the place, this could even be picked up by Thai and tourism authorities. Hey they're paranoid about Thailand's reputation.

Collecting pictures? Anyone could contribute, anonymously, the word could spread in a positive way.

Nah?

Broken M-51 bottles, washed up, are the biggest hazard to vulnerable feet. In Krabi, I noted the larger resorts send staff each morning to clear the beach area. Since that left the rest of the beach untended, my 'wife' and I would take bags and fill them, in the hope others might get the message.

MrPlum this site is a great start, so even on the Andaman coast the same problem. Has it become worse over time?

I think it has in Hua Hin. Well once you see the "city's" minuscule water treatment plant you know why, it's not just garbage one sees, it's the proactive sewage pollution of the sea.

Tourists must be complaining by the hundreds.

I remember going to Honduras with a lady I was involved with. We went to the beach with her son and at the first snack bar they just unwrapped their food and threw the wrappers on the ground, even with a trash can near by. I picked up the wrappers and asked "why did you do that?" They looked at me in amazement, and said "why not??"

They were baffled as to why I bothered. I explained, and pointed to the trash all around, and they were still wondering why. I went through the explanation of how beautiful the place is and how it is marred by the trash, they still didn't care.

She was well educated, but had been brought up with this belief that it was no big deal, have a picnic on the beach, get up and leave all the trash there.

They started to pick up when I did, but I am sure when I left town they reverted back.

I didn't like it, but can only try to change my little part, and times I was there.

Unfortunately it is going to take a lot of time to change the mindset.

We could set up a Prachuab section on this forum which already has a large readership - I'd be happy to post pics and updates, I regularly clean the beach up where we are and often join conservation groups to clean up the local reefs, the last one was in Feb: http://bangsaphanguide.com/forum/viewto ... ?f=3&t=813

buksida wrote: The big hotels could do a bit more, especially those with large beachfront properties, charging thousands per night, and with a lot of staff - get them out there during low season cleaning the beach! Or at least set aside some of your epic profits for preservation of the very thing that people come to the resort for.
I'll agree with putting the profits into presevation, but the hotels make these profits by running minimal staff - they are generally *understaffed* during high season, and only just have enough to get by in high season.

We're not alone, polluted water plagues Phuket beach -- boat-/fishermen hit by pollution, maybe that's the only way to teach them a lesson:

Wasn't there an initiative on the forum where somebody was looking to get an expats group to walk the beach regularly, collecting rubbish as they went? Whatever happened to that? I know it would only chip away at a very large problem, but it would help to keep Hua Hin's beaches cleaner, while bringing local expats together socially at the same time.
YUP. There was little interest bar yourself B.B. Will P.M. you when I get back to H.H. (working overseas just now) and we can meet up in the morning for an hour or so on the beach?? Perhaps we can encourage others to join in due course....

Not a tale about beach-rubbish, but close..A group of us cycled to Cha-Am last week, we came in from the Canal/Klong Rd thru' beautiful paddy-fields, & nice tree-lined lanes..up to a T-junction where the housing started at Cha-Am.
Well what a contrast..plastic bags strewn everywhere! The trail we were on went from serene countryside to 'urban-mess' almost instantly..& we all commented on this..again it would seem the Thais are more than happy to live with the sea of plastic all around them.. ho-hum.

Beach is totally out of bounds for me at the moment. I had an insect bite a couple of months ago, and am still suffering/recovering. I actually go under the knife again at 9 in the morning. Ask again when I've recovered.

Speedy recovery Big Boy. BTW, just picked up a toe inflation, guess it originated from the polluted foam at the beach I had to walk through...

Thanks - I'm typing this from my hospital bed as a result of infection. Make sure you look after it properly.
