Hua Hin Trip Report 1

Post by ahandpatsy »

Thought i would write a little report on how I found Hua Hin this time around. This is my 10th trip here and I wanted to give you my thoughts as the forum has been really helpful. This is not intended to be a today I did this etc etc kind of thing but just general thoughts on various topics.

I have no axe to grind with anybody or any bars and any praise or criticism is intended as honest feedback.

OK so got to the airport at 9:45 and had booked the new shuttle service to Hua Hin. I'm not sure about this for the future. I had about 1.5 hours wait for the next one and then it takes about 4 hours to get to the bus station and then you have to get a taxi to your hotel from there. Having spent £500 - £600 on getting to Bangkok is it really worth saving the £25 for the shuttle. I just found it a bit of a pain and kind of put the brakes on starting the holiday. I will call my taxi driver and get him to pick me up next time. Nothing wrong at all with the service and if I arrived at the airport just before it left then fine but I am impatient !

One of the main reasons I love travelling to Thailand is the food so...............

I had asked you guys fro some recommendations which I thankyou for and did indeed follow.

Sakura Sushi:
Actually went there twice. Possibly the prettiest plate of food I have been given on my first night. It was a real treat and loved every mouthful. Would definitely encourage others.

Bam Bam:
Went here for lunch a few times and felt pretty uninspired about it. It was just handy and fairly decent.

Moonsmile:
Ive been here quite a few times but I think now its not for me. i went there twice and for me the food tastes the same no matter what you eat. Too much fish sauce ? And it is so busy. Incidentally it was here that I saw 3 young Aussies order garlic bread, chips, spring rolls and bread and butter as their meal. Why bother getting on a plane

Oy's:
Took a Tuk Tuk up there to sample this popular spot. Actually it was pretty good. Worth the journey out there not sure, but if I was living around there it would definitely be a regular.

Ketsarin:
I know I know, those pier places. I always am drawn to them at least once a trip because they offer something you cant get on a rainy day in Birmingham. The view and feel of them is a treat so thats why we go. The food was OK steamed fish in soy sauce. It was here that I witnessed the massive thunder and lightening storm approach and hit Hua Hin a couple of thursday nights ago. Amazing to watch dozens of fork lightening strikes whilst sitting down to dinner.

JW's:
Had a spot of heartburn for a few days so fancied some farang food. Food and service actually spot on. Went there twice and actually ordered too much both times as the portions are very generous. The second time I went was the pool league night. Bloody hell thats serious stuff. I felt like I had to eat quietly just in case I put anybody off.

Seaside:
I actually went here for my last night and I wasn't disappointed. I pushed the boat out and probably had my most expensive meal ever in Hua Hin. But the king prawn, lobster etc etc were all of the highest quality. As I said not cheap but for me better than the other pier places.

Fish and Chips:
I searched and searched. Went to Soi 80, that one was closed for the season. Went to soi 94. That one was closed. Kept seeing a big sign about the new one which has now opened on Phetkasem. So no fish and chips for me.

Night Market:
Eaten here several times and I always find it good value for money, just pick the place where the most thais are eating.

Just One:
I noticed several thai people in line at a food place next to just one bar. I gave it a go and had some really good cheap food there several times.

ok enough for now . will talk about bars next time if anybody interested

This is my regular haunt in Hua Hin and the food is definitely very good, both Thai and Farang. Actually my partner plays for one of their pool teams and yes, some of the games can get a bit intense!

Any more trip reporting?

When you live here you don't visit half the places you would when on holiday - in fact I haven't even heard of half the places in that list.

Perhaps they had heartburn.

Did you try Birmingham?

OK a little bit more trip reporting. a quick review of some of the bars I went into and a few interesting situations

Firstly a few awards (all of course IMHO)

Bars With Best Looking Girls

Tiger Bar
London Bar

Most Friendly Bar

Romantic
Just One

Most Empty Bar

The one recently decked out in white used to be Headrock maybe. Never saw anybody in here, ever.

Most likely to fall down

Red

Generally I was surprised how empty the whole Binta area was. I know its low season and I have been here lots in low season but this year was the quietest ever. There seemed to be more Aussies over here this time but generally it was dead.

Also how many bars were for sale. 7 or so that I saw.

Quick feedback on some bars.

Soi Selekam: Didn't spend an awful lot of time in these bars.
Bentho bar has to have the worst music in the world. The swedish owner going through his Rock and Roll greatest hits. Same same every night. Drove me away.
Papiyati bar was fun sometimes until the owner got completely hammered and got a bit lairy.
The girls in the bar opposite on the corner ex Nelson were the most aggressive I found.

I will stop for as its going to get too long and I've probably bored or peed enough people off lol

Good balanced report. "Just one" bar is a new one to me. I have always enjoyed Bam Bam myself.
Food in both night markets is good. I like "Good steak" in the market near the SP Hospital. Totally Thai but have decided that there is a market for inexpensive western food--good luck to them.

I think 'Just One' bar may be 'Join One' bar instead, opposite Tiger Bar.
