I was as sad and cynical as everybody else and as a 4 times a week beach walker my life seemed to take a downturn--BUT the recovery is amazing, there are signs of the oil but the pleasure of a beach walk is back to 80% of what it was.

Just back from a 3 day trip to Koh Talu. There was evidence of oil there too on the stuff washed ashore. Some of the oil had set hard and looked like a gloss paint finish. But no evidence of oil on my feet.

As per usual here in Thailand people are looking at the surface and if it looks good then all is well.
Dig down into that sand a few inches and take a look.

We are across on the mainland, Bangsaphan, no evidence of any type of oil on our daily walksMidsman wrote:Just back from a 3 day trip to Koh Talu. There was evidence of oil there too on the stuff washed ashore. Some of the oil had set hard and looked like a gloss paint finish. But no evidence of oil on my feet.
The proper function of man is to live, not to exist. I shall not waste my days in trying to prolong them. I shall use my time.

I have spent time cleaning on HH beach and the same oil evidence on plastic bags and bottles etc was evident on Koh Talu. Not to the scale of HH but evident. I asked the island staff and they said they had had small amount of oil.
Re: Oil Slick puts Hua Hin Beach at it's dirtiest ever ?
Same thing happened in the UK - long after the oil on the sand had dispersed, it kept showing up on flotsam and jetsam.and the same oil evidence on plastic bags and bottles etc
If the town authorities can't afford proper beach cleaning equipment, getting a few guys to walk the high water line at dawn every day armed with gloves and bin bags will make a big difference..
I may be drunk, Miss, but in the morning I shall be sober and you will still be ugly...

First time on HH beach this morning since last Thursday. No oil on feet after our walk so looks like nature is winning the battle.Beach looked good but still debris with oil on evident.

Thanks Midsman, I'll try to take a walk myself tomorrow, and assess the suitability to resume nightly dog walks.

Well, as expected, I did my planned recon visit this afternoon. The tide was about half way. I entered the beach at Soi 77 and walked South the short distance to the Marakesh and back again. I mainly walked at the water's edge.
There were quite a few people using the beach, and I could see about 50 swimmers.
First impression was that it was back to normal, However, as I was walking, the sand definitely has that same greyish tint that was always noticeable when walking the beaches in NE England. The difference being, in England it was coal dust. Here, I assume it is oil coming to the surface. I was deliberately walking on the grey bits.
There was a young kiddie digging down in the sand and burying himself. There was no sign of oil on him.
The big test was the state of my shoes when I got home. Despite deliberately walking on the grey bits, there was no oil.
My conclusion, the beach is not clean yet, but the objective of this recon was to assess the beach's suitability to start walking my dogs again. It will be fine

Good report BB.

2 successful beach walk later, you can see oil blemishes starting to appear on the soles of my shoes - nothing to worry about, but just a shame the clean up operation wasn't a bit better.

Thank you Big Boy and others keeping us informed on this topic.
I just arrived a few days ago for my winter sojourn and have been to the beach for a stroll three times now. I noticed that when paddling in any pools left by the tide, I'm getting spots of oil on my feet, so looks like it is collecting there just under the sand surface - that's where kids tend to play too. Pretty sticky stuff - only thing I had in the room to remove it was some menthol / eucalyptus oil which has done the job.

Whilst on my way to the beach today by the Chinese Temple route I found a gang of workers concreting the large area at the side of the Temple. This meant that it was almost impossible to make it to the beach, I just made it but someones footprint was in the wet concrete.
Over the past 4 weeks I have not seen any bad cases of the oil slick, the odd jellyfish keeps the punters entertained though.
