Oil Slick puts Hua Hin Beach at it's dirtiest ever ?

Post by Pagey »

I walked the beach mid morning today and noticed a lot of debris washed up again, about 20% - 30% of the amount last week, and lots of smaller stuff, mainly plant life. And lots of footwear, I gave up counting after 10.

However, what is most disconcerting is it was all covered in a black oily looking sludge. This also left black globules on the beach itself. By the time I'd walked to the Hyatt from Condochain, there was about a 3 foot wide black sludge line in the sand at the tide mark.

A bit further South where the beach often gets cut off when the tide is coming in , the waves coming in were black foam, not white like a bit further North. It also appeared to smell oily in that area but not sure if I imagined that.

I can't recall it being like this, black and oily, in over 10 years of walking this area of the beach but I maybe wrong.

As tomorrow is Wednesday and the day the vendors have to close as the beach is allegedly cleaned, let's see if a clean up operation takes place.

I went for a walk this morning with the g/f and after a while our feet were filthy with oil.Everything washed ashore had a coating of what looked like crude oil. There were blobs of oil everwhere along the shoreline. We had to literally boil water and scrub our feet and ankles clean when we got home.

Has there been a oil spill recently ?

I'm normally on the beach most nights, but didn't go last night, and the earliest I'll get there is Thursday - such a shame, this oil thing sounds serious.

[Edit] I should have said that I've seen a few photos that support the oil slick theory.

Hey SydneyGuy, don't waste your time as Takiab beach is filthy also with the oily sludge polluting the joint. I walked from the ferry terminal construction as far as the last vendor south and I gave up due to it actually getting worse the further south I went. Definitely an oil based pollutant that is a pain to remove from feet or shoes. Might have my work cut out this Thursday afternoon doing my bit helping Trash Hero Hua Hin. Not looking forward to that....

http://englishnews.thaipbs.or.th/hua-hi ... -oil-slick

An oil slick stretching about ten kilometers long hit the beach of Hua Hin today (Tuesday) emitting foul smell and driving away local and foreign tourists from the beach.
The presence of the oil slick prompted Hua Hin mayor Nopporn Wutthikul to seek help from the Navy to find out if the problem was caused by oil spills from commercial freighters or large fishing boats or any of those vessels sank in the sea off Hua Hin causing the oil spills.

In the meantime, specimens of the oil slick were sent to the environment office for tests.

Hua Hin district officer Sutthipong Klai-udom said it was initially suspected that the oil was deliberately dumped into the sea by a vessel dealing in contraband goods.

He nevertheless advised tourists not to venture into the sea for 1-2 days until the situation has returned to normal.

There was a ship that went down further up towards Bangkok about 2 weeks ago. Crewmen missing and they found their bodies inside when they righted the vessel. I don't know what kind of ship it was but a possible suspect in all this given the sea current flow south from Bangkok. Pete

EDIT: Here's the ship story. Quite a substantial size vessel, but happened on September 19th. It could easily have contained a significant amount of bunker.

I wonder if this will be linked to the threat to deregister thousands of fishing boats....sort of a dirty protest! Or some uncaring boat owner just flushing his bilges?

My son has a couple of friends here from the UK for a couple of days.

Last night they went to the night market, and then he walked them along the beach before asking me to pick them up at Market Village. Of course I asked where they had been. I queried the beach bit, but they said it was OK, the oil had gone :D .

We get back to my house, and I'm wondering what the black footprints are in the car port :cuss:

They took their shoes off before entering the house, and their feet were caked in it. Washing their feet had no effect, Fortunately we have some fairly heavy duty gunk remover that did the job eventually.

I'm dreading looking inside my car this morning. :cuss:

I visited at 12 noon today, at both Soi 75/1 and Soi 85. There was no cleanup activity anywhere on the beach. Soi 75/1 area was oiled, but not a lot of debris and not too bad. Soi 85 area and south is a real oily debris mess.

General Cleanup begins at oil-fouled Hua Hin beaches
Government workers and local residents began cleaning up Hua Hin beach on Wednesday after the Prachuap Khiri Khan coastline was fouled with oil, tar balls and petroleum-coated garbage. The cleanup started at 9am with employees from the Hua Hin municipality, district office and civilian volunteers.

I'm just back from doing the same walk as yesterday; Condochain to past the Hyatt where the tide gets high early, and no sign of any clean up along that stretch. It looks like they started at Takiab but haven't got past the high tide mark.

From the dscription of the ship that went down, I would say that it was using marine gas oil, similar to hat we would use in the car. The photos of the beach polution look like heavy diesel oil, sludge or crude oil.
Just to add to the speculation, there is an oil / gas production field about 45 - 50 nautical miles SE of Hus Hin.
Any registered comercial trading ship above 500 tonnes have to produce records of their waste oil / sludge periodically, and any discrepancies will result in a fine for the senior crew and the owners.
