Oil Slick puts Hua Hin Beach at it's dirtiest ever ?
Re: Oil Slick puts Hua Hin Beach at it's dirtiest ever ?
As a 'gut instinct' I would agree with you, Pete. However, the GISTDA imply that the slick(s) were tracked from these river estuaries. Is their evidence reliable?
Re: Oil Slick puts Hua Hin Beach at it's dirtiest ever ?
^ My read from what he said is that the slicks were tracked (south) in the Gulf towards HH from where these estuaries are. The ship sinking zone was directly east of where these estuaries are. I can't speak about currents or how far east of the slick the sinking area is, but it would solve a lot of suspicion if they reported what that ship was carrying and what it was fueled with. My problem is that it's hard for me to believe much of anything said/reported here anymore. Pete

I would have to agree with that, Pete, unless of course, they can find a Farang ship to blame it on!My problem is that it's hard for me to believe much of anything said/reported here anymore.
However, as posted previously, it is highly unlikely that the ship that sank, or any other small coastal vessel, would be using crude oil, and definitatly not fishing boats. Yes, it has not been proved that the gunk is crude, but "marine gas oil" does not roll up in "tar" like balls, it will float on the surface and show up as an oily sheen on the water. The ship that sank was supposedly a small container ship, but of course, we are not told what the cargo was.
(edit) Also, any leakage fro the ship that sank would have shown up on the surface long before now.

When long tailed boats run on old Japanese car engines, as do old Mercedes and Volvos, only god knows what kind of engine was in that old freighter. Pete
EDIT: An interesting note if you go to below link which is large version of satellite photo/map, the currents run directly east to west from the sinking area to the estuary area, then south.
http://www.gistda.or.th/main/th/node/989
The sinking was 8 nautical miles from the coast = 14.8 kilometers. Use the map scale to measure but it looks due east of the estuaries to me.

Went to HH beach yesterday at Soi 75 to help with any clean up.There was noboby at all cleaning anywhere along HH beach. The tide was in so dont know if that was the reason. So decided to take a ride to Takiab beach.Went to where they are building the new boat moorings and no cleaning going off.The beach looked clean so we decided to take a stroll. After about 200m I checked the soles of my feet and oil was all over them.So it looks like a lot of oil as seeped into the sand.
Such a shame as I like to walk and run on the beach.Looks like we are in for a long hard going time, but I hope I am wrong.
Does anyone know if there is any clean up arranged for tomorrow ( Sunday ) at HH beach ?
Regards in advance

Went to Takiab Beach Thursday this week. Just arrived a very small group of volunteers started beach cleaning. The group soon grew in numbers and visibly they managed to take away the worst damages. That might be the reason that you did not see worse when you went Friday
I showed to be a Thursday Volunteer Cleaning team (thais & falangs) - but I only saw this cleaning Takiab area, not south or north, so can not contribute about whole beach. Damages seam to be getting worse - with new reports both south and north....

For any members in the oil industry, what is that concession shown on this map in the northern gulf marked as MP G1?

Is this not the danger now? The beach looks fine, so no more cleaning action to be taken. However, there is still oil covered by a thin layer of sand, and there is still transparent oil coming ashore.Big Boy confused Tic Tac when he wrote:The beach didn't look too bad, but you could see an oily film at the head of each wave.
Despite not living far from the sea all of my life, this is the first time I've had a slick come ashore close to where I live. I often watch clean ups going on in other places in the world on the news, and they take months/years to clear the mess, and in my warehousing days, we've sent thousands of drums of special detergent to areas affected. How come Hua Hin can clear it up so quickly with a few volunteers and a couple of tractors?

I think that the oil companies have bought the rights to explore this field in the future, and there is no exploration going on at the moment. Most of the fields shown are gas fields, not oil. Offshore oil fields are more to the south of Thailand.STEVE G wrote:For any members in the oil industry, what is that concession shown on this map in the northern gulf marked as MP G1?

Re: Oil Slick puts Hua Hin Beach at it's dirtiest ever ?
Yes, that is exactly the problem with "heavy" types of oil. The globules of oil combine with particles of sand, and because they are now even heavier, they sink into the sand. The lighter stuff, which may or may not be the same oil, will tend to both evaporate off, and get dispersed by the action of the waves. Is this not the danger now? The beach looks fine, so no more cleaning action to be taken. However, there is still oil covered by a thin layer of sand, and there is still transparent oil coming ashore.
I just hope that they have found the source, and not trying yet another coverup!

Yes, that's my thoughts as well, it seems odd that there is more oil being reported out to sea if it just came from a fishing boat or whatever the latest story is.Nereus wrote: I just hope that they have found the source, and not trying yet another coverup!

Perhaps a Thai submarine is lying at the bottom of the Gulf...?
EDIT: looking again at the photo, it;'s good to see that volunteers have been issued with all the latest equipment.
