Water shortage in Hua Hin

Post by DSB »

We just noticed today that our water tank was almost empty. As I had to pay the water bill anyway, I asked and was told that the Hua Hin water reserve was almost empty, and that the pipeline from Pranburi was under repair. The pipeline should be back in the next 2 days.

Water supply is a perennial issue in HH - any building that doesn't have a pump gets supply outages at peak times and those whose pumps put the supply pipes under negative pressure suck in contaminated groundwater wherever a pipe join doesn't make a perfect seal.

If the town had a proper water tower, demand fluctuations would be evened out, no-one would need a pump, and with the pipework kept under positive pressure all the time, making the supply potable would be a real prospect.

- Is there any good reason why this tried and tested route to safe tap water can't be achieved in the town?

I'm not sure what the build cost of water towers is in Thailand, but looking at the money spent in the USA on these projects, I'm guessing that a tower to serve the 100,000 residents of HH might come in at around 100 million THB.

A loan for that amount could be funded at a cost of around 5 million THB p.a. or 50 baht per capita per annum.

- Surely that's affordable..?

Where does the municipal water supply come from? Are there reservoirs someplace nearby? If so, are they full this year, or ... ?

I claim no expertise in this field but I understand the majority of Hua Hin's water supply these days comes from the Pranburi dam, which I am told is very low this year.

Some parts of town have always been worse than others for supply i.e. Soi 80 / Rainoon area.

There is a small reservoir between the Raiway station and Petchasem road, opposite the fire station but not sure what it is used for these days, there are options for emergencies; water can be diverted from dams out towards Pala U and there is fresh water at Khao Tao but not sure if that is used in Hua Hin.

Years ago there used to be fleets of water tankers delivering water to replenish peoples tanks but they seem to be a rare sight these days.

If you need water you should order it from the tessaban; I believe you do this by phoning the fire station and the water is delivered in one of the fire department tankers. The other day I saw one of the private "tap water" tankers (old blue truck, with reddish tank) filling up from the drainage khlong on the khan khlong road behind Hua Hin Hospital. Draw your own conclusions about that.

The tessaban web site has a notice about cutting off water in order to repair a main near Sailom Hotel, but that was for 2 December. Our water stopped this morning, 4th. So that was useful - not!

When there have been supply problems in the past, water has been tankered in - don't let it deter you from visiting - the hotels will find a way to keep your shower working..!

They'll be shipping all that water to the rest of the country where water levels are very low pretty much everywhere.
