Thailand floods of 2017

Post by PeteC »

My bones are telling me this is going to be a wet year with periodic and perhaps major flooding. Check in here prior to your visit to Thailand and before in-country trips to see what the current situation is. Below is a recap (oldest to newest) as to where we are at the moment. Go to the links to see details. Pete

Widespread city flooding, water slowly draining

"Bangkok faced city-wide flooding following heavy rain late Wednesday and early Thursday with 23 stretches on major roads under water and Wang Thong Lang district the hardest hit......Wang Thong Lang had heaviest rainfall with 156 millimetres. Heavy flooding was reported at 23 spots on major roads. Water on Ratchadaphisek Road in front of the Criminal Court was 20cm deep......The remaining 14 spots remained flooded, including Ratchadaphisek Road's inbound and outbound lanes, Lat Phrao intersection, the Lak Si Circle in Bang Khen and Lat Phrao Soi 122, Sukhumvit Road near the BTS Bearing station, Lamsali intersection in Bang Kapi and Srinakarindra Road near Wat Si Iam.

Several schools announced they would close on Thursday - among them Ratwinit Bangkaeo in the Si Nakarin area, Bodindecha in Lat Phrao and Phibun Uppatham in Huai Khwang."

Bangkok flooding is chronic problem

"BMA officials admit they cannot cope with heavy rains as experts blame infrastructure and lack of preparedness.

BANGKOK WILL continue to experience flooding after heavy rains unless water-drainage problems including roads and canals are solved, water-management experts have said."

Governor apologises for city flood chaos: 'I tried my best'

......."In several areas, the volume of rain was measured at more than 100 millimetres per hour the previous night and that resulted in the overwhelming volume of excess water in Bangkok's canals, he said.

The heaviest rain was measured in Wang Thong Lang district at 169mm per hour, he said.

"The rainfall was almost threefold higher than the city's drainage capability," said Pol Gen Aswin"......

^ Bangkok city is underwater again this afternoon, but that shouldn't affect you on the elevated and expressways from the airport to the junction with RT 4, Phetkasem Road which you'll join south of Bangkok and take all the way to Hua Hin. I don't know the local situation with water on RT 4 today, but everything will hinge upon how much rain and when tonight and in the morning before you set off. Someone more local can perhaps comment on the situation around Hua Hin today. Pete

The wife saw this on a Thai site and said to be Hua Hin today. Can someone confirm from the overhead highway signs or surrounding buildings, as I can't see the signs well. Pete

It's Hua Hin, but looks more like yesterday. The Petchkasem/Soi 112 junction. I think the engineers built the drainage canal to the sea a bit low there, hence the canal always overflows there.

Yes Big Boy 'yesterday' I came along Petchkasem Road from Khao Tao to town yesterday about 15:30 the white mini bus you can seen under the green road signs had broken down, making traffic passing it divert into even deeper water. The flooding went as far as he Suan Son Beach turn off and there has been some major drainage construction work going on the whole length of the new road, I just hope the new drains haven't been fully commissioned yet, if they have they are a total waste of time.

Also just a few days ago before the heavy rains came a mechanical digger was used to clear large amounts of debris and soil out of the drainage ditch at the bottom of Soi 112 to the Patravadi High School, this was obviously a waste of time as I'm sure the whole of the drainage system 'underground' will be block solid.

Guess this problem is a result of the "success" of the pumping station on 102?

Many Buri Ram areas face flood risk

"Five dykes in Buri Ram province are already full, putting nearby areas at risk of flooding.

The areas at risk are: Huai Yang, Huai Khi Noo, Huai Yai, Huai Tako and Huai Khieo.

The province’s irrigation chief, Kitikul Sepaseeraporn, on Wednesday blamed the historic high rainfall for the flood threat.

“Normally, rainfall in May in the province has been about 100 millimetres. But this month, rainfall has already reached 273 millimetres,” he said."
