2017 The Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal

Drone captures WWI poem written in poppies

The words of one of the most famous poems to emerge from the horrors of World War One have been written in poppies across locations in England, Wales and France.

It's been done by the Royal British Legion to launch this year's Poppy Appeal to help veterans of the armed forces.

In Flanders Fields was written by a Canadian officer called John McCrae and is read by poet Michael Rosen.

Modern people understand nothing of poetry and fail miserably to realise the horrors of this whole event. The lessons of the past are fading, which is bad news.

Canada is very proud of Dr John McRae who was from Ontario. He was a Soldier, Surgeon and Poet and sadly died in 1918, not from enemy action, but from Pneumonia. When war was declared in 1914, men from every British Dominion and Colony came to defend the Empire. Difficult for us to understand that sort of patriotism and loyalty today.

I saw a BBC article, that I can't find again right now, which indicated there's a lot of verbal on the street harassment going on this year from people wearing poppies against those who aren't. What is wrong with people now, has the world gone mad? :( Social media is turning otherwise normal people into borderline thugs perhaps?

If I see the article again later tonight or tomorrow I'll post it. Pete

Sad isn't it? When I was still a young lad in school, we used to help out on flag days, going out in pairs on a Saturday morning with a whole lot of flags (basically a square of paper with a pin stuck through it) and a sealed can with a coin slot. We did this for the Red Cross and many other charities, the poppies included. Back in the day, they were made of paper and had a bit of wire that you could stick in your shirt buttonhole..

Can you take some photos from there if possible for you, and post them up on here? Pete

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

Utter filth. I'd love for someone to say that to my face. Might end up in jail but who cares. People should learn that deliberately offensive speech face to face carries consequences on the street, they're not anonymous creeps on Twitter when you can face them down.

I tend to agree with this sentiment. Social media actually turns people into introverts imo. Also, flawed policies allowing mass refugee migration, as opposed to immigration policies, which I would assume are much stricter.
They should introduce 90 day reporting like they do in Thailand..

Note to self: I have not seen the Bangladeshi lady who has been selling roti from her cart in the market for almost a year. She had been here for at least 5 years previous so assume the immigration department here is actually doing something. I'll miss the roti, though.
