Proper air rifles require a licence the same as any other firearm. There used to be a gun shop right close to the original Bangkok Bank on Petchkasem Rd.

I am aware of the law so the rifle will belong to my wife. Just need to know where air rifles are sold at present.

The Junta banned all privately owned firearms a couple of years a go but I don't know if that measure was ever rescinded.

Back in 2015 the Junta announced that all privately owned firearms had to be surrendered but I don't know if it was ever enforced in any way.

No, never enforced. I believe there was a restriction on some large calibre centre-fire rifles that could have been considered "war weapons", but that has apparently been rescinded.

Gun possession, use by foreigners to be banned

https://www.bangkokpost.com/news/securi ... recent_box

The National Legislative Assembly (NLA) on Thursday passed amendments to the firearms law which ban foreigners living in Thailand from having and using guns and also place controls on fireworks and Bang Fai rockets.

The previous version of the Firearms, Bullets, Explosive Objects, Fireworks and Fake Firearms Act did not require people who want to have or use a gun to be Thai nationals. Consequently foreigners living in Thailand were able to seek permission to have and use guns.

The newly amended law requires Thai nationality.

Gen Ood Buengbon, head of the NLA's committee scrutinising the amendments, said the new law would not have any impact on those already having permits before its promulgation in the Royal Gazette, expected within 90 days.
Foreigners are able to practice at shooting ranges, he said.

The new law also expands controls to silencers, soft bullets and Bang Fai homemade rockets and spinning wheels.
Sound suppressors are controlled because they have become popular and people are unaware when there is a crime. Soft bullets are included because their impact is similar to bullets. Bang Fai rockets are regulated because the competitions are widespread and potentially threaten life, property and aircraft.

Authorities will set weight limits for the gunpowder in Bang Fai and criteria for gunpowder purchase and transport.
Under the law, those threatening others by misleading them into believing they have a gun, bullets or explosive, or that a bomb has been planted, are liable to a jail term of up to three years and/or a fine of up to 60,000 baht. Other offences under the law carry a jail term of 1-20 years.

The NLA passed the third reading of the amending bill on Thursday with 201 votes. There were five abstentions and one NLA member voted against it.

Soft bullets, are these what are also known as rubber bullets? Non lethal except in extremely rare cases?

Have the same impact as a lead bullet? :/

I had a great .22 air rifle in Dubai (legally) which I had to leave behind when I came here. I miss it.

I personally don't think you can blame Thailand for not wanting us to own guns. They read the news too; all the cases mass shooting in the US and etc. How often do you get Thai people running around shooting people?

The last thing Thailand needs is for Pattaya's heart broken handsome men to go off the rails with firearms.

I actually never knew we were even allowed to own firearms before. I do know of a few Farang that have guns in their homes but they are registered in the wife's name.

Anyway, this is one law which really doesn't bother me at all. Even in my own country I chose not to own a gun, and let's face it, in Thailand there is absolutely no reason for wanting to own a gun.

Actually, it would be better if the government banned the private ownership guns outright, with a mandatory 25 years to life for anyone caught breaking the law.

With that having been said, I would rather have Somchai shoot me instead using more creative means.

Umm...

"Thailand has a fervent gun culture on par with the United States and has become a world leader in firearms-related homicides."

Not by any means all due to uprisings in the South:

"Who is responsible for the high homicide rate? The Thai government does not provide a specific breakdown of gun-related murders and acts of violence. But some experts point to the Malay-Muslim insurgents in the deep south as well as the mafia syndicates across the country as significant arms-bearing groups.

However, other analysts such as Herzog say they believe that a lot of the violence is perpetrated by individuals, given that business disputes, robberies, fits of passion, personal vendettas and loss of face are often named as the main reasons for gun-related deaths.

And then there is the issue of contract killings. "In Thailand the number of hitmen is relatively high compared to other countries, although no estimates are available. The starting price for a 'hit' is about 50,000 baht (around $1,400). Hitmen are accessible and fairly cheap."

Tend to agree with Takiap, the author of the link provided by 404 ,Mr Gabriel Dominguez is generally not very favourable towards Thailand, as you can read from previous articles in the paper, in addition i do not believe the author of the article has any first hand knowledge of being and living in Asia, perhaps Deutchse Welle form a different opinion when they publish articles about different Asian countries, the same of course applies to all European press,"freedom" is the word.
