Wire Mesh Fluorescent Light Guard

Post by Big Boy »

Does anybody know where we can get a couple of these at a decent price please?

We have 2 vulnerable fluorescent light fittings, which will cause significant problems if hit. We just need to be able to put protection around them. We've looked on line, and can only find them outside of Thailand, at stupid prices,

Safety items in Thailand? You have to be joking!

A clear plastic (acrylic) tube cover is a better option. Don't know anything about the following, maybe only bulk buys?
Or maybe only shipped from Japan. There is a phone number.

buy that type of wire at Global House and make your own. I think it was ฿189 for a 4' x 8' piece. In the back room, but is heavie guage wire than what you show. buy the wire clamps, for mounting it, in the electrical dept

Well, that looked perfect for the job. However, I tried to register, and received the message:
We do not sell to personel gerneral public. We could not accept for personel registration.
Good try though

if it they can be found in Holland at a reasonable price I'd be happy to bring them over for you next month

but I only know the ones Nereus refers to which is like a metal lamp housing with a polycarbonate cover, like the one in this link

https://www.lampdirect.nl/philips-tcw060-1x-tl-d-58w-hf

I have never seen lose mesh metal covers. My neighbour works in the Dutch equivalent of B&Q, I'll ask him if he knows where to get the metal guard things in your pic

if you can find them on the net with delivery to NL, I'd happily bring them over.

Thank you very much for your kind offer, but if I can't buy something, I'll have it made here - I don't think it would be expensive. I just thought they'd be readily available off the shelf :D

They may do. I'll have a look. My Mr Fixit reckons there's nothing like it in this area, but maybe he's never looked. I can check Global House as well.

Maybe not this one, but something similar. Just pull it apart and use the rack part.

Stainless is also a plus, as those ones that you have posted will corrode quickly if used outside. Also, spiders love them and will soon find a way to use them, which in turn leads to an accumulation of dust.

BB, for what it's worth, just remove your 'vulnerable' units and replace with a LED one that has a plastic cover. Getting more difficult to find fluorescent bulbs, have already retrofitted my kitchen ones with LEDs, the rest will follow suit as they give up the ghost. Even the fluorescents with the electronic ballasts..

I guess that these are examples. But it is not clear if the "tube" is any stronger than an ordinary glass fluro lamp.

Homepro has a fairly wide selection. I've replaced the circular fluorescents with leds, you just rip out everything under the cover and wire this straight in.
The 4' led bulbs I have also seen, but you might as well get the whole unit complete with plastic guard, much brighter than the fluorescents. It looks like a strip of mosaic inside, and if you are going to the bother of mounting a guard with a couple of screws in the ceiling, this would be about the same amount of work unscrewing the old and in with the new.

OMG where is the STUPID emoticon?

Such is my hate for the constant hassle of Home Pro staff - I rarely go in there for a browse. Normally if I do go in, Mrs BB has to walk in front of me telling the masses to back off.

Following up on VincentD's message above, I went into Home Pro this morning - I knew there wouldn't be too many little helpers hassling me between the entrance and the light section (7 to be precise). Mrs BB actually wanted to stock up on regular light bulbs, so that created the necessary diversion for me to browse unhindered.

Well, I found the LED stuff, and there was nothing really suitable. I walked around the corner, and there was a wall display of what I'd been looking for - actually better than I'd been looking for  . Mr Fixit must have misunderstood what I wanted.

I went back to find Mrs BB, who was just having her last bulb tested, and told her to follow me (no problem a little helper following now - I'd already had my browse :D ). I chose the fittings I wanted, and the little helper didn't even try to tell me that I wanted something else, which must be a first. Mr Fixit is coming this afternoon to fit them. Absolutely delighted - I might even buy 2 more.

So thanks to all of you who helped. I felt quite silly when what I'd wanted was on open display, so close to home.
