Swimming pool operating costs

Post by BUSHWHACKER »

Is there any general rule of thumb on the approximate costs of operating a swimming pool, basing those costs on per litre or cubic meter? Both salt and chlorine systems.

Our pool was < 20k liter, and 5k baht worth of chlorine (25 kgs maybe, or a bit more) lasted about 5 year. At Udon Thani, so used half the year. Just two adults using, and under cover, so very clean, low maintenance pool.

I think cost of electricity is the largest factor

If you have to ask you can't afford it! Swimming pools can be lots of fun if you take care of them yourself. Fortunately you in Hua Hin have lots of pool shops to consult with.

Actually the costs can vary e.g. The efficiency of the pump can dramatically reduce the costs. Even if you can afford it it pays to be economical.

Just to put it straight, a salt water pool uses salt to produce chlorine, it is not salt water. It is usually considered that a salt water type is cheaper to operate, plus it is a lot safer than using liquid chlorine.

As others have posted, there are too many variables involved to give any useful estimate of costs. Electicity cost is only a relatively small part of the total operating costs.

Cost depends who you buy from, and quantity of supplies when bought. We purchased one drum of chlorine, and lasted for our entire stay in that house.

Cost wise also, I contracted independently to have the pool constructed. Same contractor who did our waterfall. 3x5 meter, 2+m and 1.5 meter deep sections, about half half. Pool contractors wanted 300k to 500k to build with fancy filter system. I had it built for 50k baht, and got a 10k baht filter system online.

Nice therapy, 2+meter part, and sitting dipping part, shallow side. Because of depth and shade, stayed cool in hot season, and very refreshing, as opposed to sun exposed and basically warm bath water.

Just the pool itself:
