Perks For High Post Count Posters

Post by GLCQuantum »

So we all know that without us forum members, this website would be worth nothing. We are the WD40 between the cogs. The 'tics' that complete the 'tacs'. The foot soldiers in the shadows. With this in mind...

How about a few little perks thrown our way? Personally I'd like unlimited edit time. Just saw a post on 'Caption comp' that was supposed to end with,

"... let her hair down."

But on passing I noticed that I'd, somehow, missed out the 'hair' part of the joke so it doesn't make any sense. It's not an English sentence. But alas! My fifteen minutes of edit time is up.

So there's my request.

"Gimme unlimited edit time or I swear I'm gonna leave you"
.

I think once you hit 2500 'meaningful' posts it's time for admin to give a little back. All it seems to be is take, take, take from them nowadays. I wish they'd appreciate just HOW much time I'm able to waste on this here forum.

To conclude, what would you like to have as a perk for the many hours that you have sacrificed for this forum?

So it looks like increasing the edit time is the most popular choice for a perk. Admin, I expect this to be given the go ahead by sunrise.

Failing this, I may just start myself a 'Union'. Let's see how much you care when posters go on strike for a week or two. Yes, you heard me...

You have until SUNRISE!... (or possibly until early afternoon which is when I'll probably wake up) to sort this injustice out. Throw us a perk, if you will.

There is a perfectly logical reason for the editing time limit. If say you return and edit a post a day or two later all of the subsequent posts replying to you will no longer make sense and the thread will be gibberish for anyone reading it. Hence the time limit - we suggest constructing posts offline first, thinking and re-reading before hitting the submit button.

Regarding perks for loyal members, we did setup a private access forum a few years back to allow discussion on topics that were not suitable for the public board and the sharing of useful information. Due to a breakdown in trust and leaks of information by certain members we had to close it.

Sensible suggestions though on perks for loyal members will be considered.

Perhaps have a serious discussion 'sticky' somewhere that a question can be asked by anyone to get just the forum regular folk's opinion, but you need (for example) a 1000 or more posts to reply/post/vote as it would weed out the trolls, alt accounts, smart-arses, tranient types, newbies or just the plain foolish (mostly).

I know you can ask in 'Ask the Expats' but sometimes the replies from whoever with less than 500 posts are often uninspiring and way-off-the-mark/borderline troll answers. It might give some posters with something on their mind more impetus to post as they would know they will get more experienced or quality replies generally.

Edit - Forgot to say, discussion can be viewed by all but just have some post count restrictions on who can reply to get rid of some of the drivel.

I regularly read the forum but do not post often. However it is obvious that many posts contribute little to the various topics even from seasoned members. How do you measure meaningful or useful. Very subjective.

:agree:

I know many who read but either don't register or don't post. Some of these are knowledgeable people who've been here for many years.

Some people won't post for fear of ridicule etc. On some topics you need the thick skin of a rhino or you need to be a stubborn old sot akin to a Yorkshireman to weather the storm :D

Volume of posts means nothing IMO. Some may have a lot of time on your hands and just want to put two penny worth' into any thread that tickles their fancy and others may do so because it makes them feel important.

Personally I think merit should be awarded to those who post sensible, meaningful responses to people who seek advice. In that respect I frequently do not qualify

The best 'award' IMO is 'respect'

I have spoken to many many expats who live in HH, who have looked at the forum a couple of times and thought it had nothing to offer and never returned. One of their observations is that this is obviously a place for people with too much time on their hands and who take the forum far too seriously.
This is an example of this--leave it alone, this is a great site to find where to buy things, where to eat and a place to ventilate frustrations. Leave it alone, keep the editing to a minimum.

As others have pointed out - there's just as much tomfoolery in threads by 'seasoned' members. And by restricting the people who can post to an elite group, you risk the OP not being able to get his question answered. I was once in a position to help a member on an unrelated forum but, due to the fact I didn't have a high enough post count, the question remained unanswered.

Once you put 'milestones' up (as in the 10 post rule), members will post just about anything to reach that 'milestone'. So IMO setting more 'milestones' would be a waste of time and encourage meaningless posts. Leave it as it is.

True...fair enough, it was a FWIW post because if people don't post then there isn't a forum and all the voyeurs out there would gleen nothing.

There are really very very few English speaking Thailand forums available, I can only think of 3 and this forum is one of them(ThaiVisa and Korat Fart being the other 2).
Thailand is supposedly one of the most popular countries in the world for anglo English speaking retirees and tourists and there is only 3 forums that cater to them/us, I think that is incredibly strange, weird and funny.

And as Richard say's, 100% incorrect. There's a 101 English language Thai based forums out there and even some in the UK. I'm not going to mention them here, Just googling Thailand forums and looking through the first few pages comes up with plenty. There's even more than one in Korat.

Seriously? Open your email or word processor, take as much time writing as you want. When it's good to go, copy and paste into the forum.
