USB modem/Dongle use for Internet

Post by Green Nomad »

I use a USB modem here in Oman for broadband, and when in HH, I normally hook up my mobile to use as a modem. But recently DTAC seem to have slowed up or even stopped me being able to use my phone. Is there anyone using a USB modem on laptop for internet use. I am located 8 km out of town and fear that that would be a downside. Any views please..GN

It depends which side out of town you are. Towards Takiab area there is good 3G reception. Going th other way you may be restricted to HSPDA speeds.

Have been using a mobile phone as a modem with laptop for a few years, One-2-Call sim, EDGE/GPRS, available pretty much everywhere though its far from fast and only really good enough for basic browsing and email.

I'm heading back to HH in a couple of weeks - what's the best deal with regards to the dongle or SIM with regards to Internet connectivity?

I got something similar to this. http://www.ais.co.th/mobileinternet/en/ ... g-21-mbps/

There's different packages and modems on the right.

If you've already got a dongle or Internet Phone it's about 700b unlimited per month.

I've been experiencing very similar with TrueMove's 3G since they launched this new 'TrueMove H (3.5G) service GN. As Dtac have also launched their own 3G in the last few months, could this be a bit up and down also??
Dtac launch 3G service: http://www.telenor.com/en/news-and-medi ... n-thailand
This new Dtac sim card may be relevant to your issue!?... http://wirelessfederation.com/news/tag/dtac/

Anyone who's interested, TrueMove's new H (Hspa), aka 3G+, aka 3.5G, specials aka, too much too young:

Coverage Map, most of which is in the sea when you have a close look:

And it's current problems according to 'Asia.cnet':
Operator True Move has been getting quite a bit of flak for its recently launched True Move H 3G+ network. Also know as Hspa or 3.5G, True is touting a network top speed of 42Mbps, under ideal conditions. What is being reported though are stories of dropped calls, continuous switching from EDGE to 3G, network dead zones popping up at random and having your current SIM card discontinued without notice.

Re: this 'H' or Hspa or Hdspa... my TrueMove 3G service mostly displays H+, and also on a speedtest says 'Hspa', but I'm on their 'old' 3G service!? We can change over to this new 'H' service apparently by getting new sim and changing APN settings.

Thanks all for your comments.

I am actually located near to Thap Thai, end of Soi 112. According to the coverage map for the AIS system it looks as if it would be a weak signal at best.
Surely if I get a stronge 3G signal with my phone, whatever company it is, it would be the same for a USB modem with the same SIM, right?.

On another point, are there any pay as you go SIMs out there that will work in my own dongle?. I have an Omani mobile company (Nawras) dedicated USB modem. Your thoughts please. GN.

To change from the "old" TrueMove to the new TrueMove H is actually a MNP (mobile number portability) transaction, identical to what you would do to change from, say, DTAC to TrueMove H. As a part of the process you sign-up for a new plan at TrueMove H. You then take your new SIM and wait for "no coverage" to appear with your current SIM, and then swap SIMs. When I did the MNP from DTAC to TrueMove, there was a period of about six hours before the new service was available.

TrueMove H has finally matched the iPhone "Unlimited 3G" (which means 3GB/month, then shaped to EDGE) B599/month post-paid package that I have with TrueMove.

I'm still waiting to see any benefit of "upgrading" to TrueMove H, since I understand that the iPhone4 is phyisically limited to a maximum download speed of 7.2Mpbs, which I already get with the "old" TrueMove.

There was speculation that as TrueMove H added coverage areas, that we old TrueMove users would not be able to roam on their network, but that seems to be not true. In the past when I traveled between Hua Hin and Bangkok, I only got 3G in the Hua Hin-ChaAm area and in Bangkok itself, with the long road between only at EDGE speed. This last trip, a couple weeks ago, I had 3G reception almost the entire distance, so coverage for we old TrueMove users is growing.

Can anybody give me a solid reason to upgrade to TrueMove H? I don't see any downside, but the inertia of my lazy nature sees me staying with TrueMove for a while.
