Which Mobile Phone?

Need a new one, mine is on its last legs, can any of you phone gurus recommend a device that has the following spec:

Android OS
Dual Sim
2GB RAM minimum
5" screen (or thereabouts)
Quad core CPU (or better)
Max budget 10k

In the UK at the moment where you cant buy dual sim phones as the networks want to push everyone into lock-in contracts. Very frustrtating.

Well I know that these two are over your budget, but for the rest of the specs they are spot on or better:

Sony Xperia Z5 Dual
Samsung Galaxy S7 / S7 Edge

These are way beyond what I want to spend on a phone, though some of the lower Xperia models look ok.

This may be helpful in your search... you'll have to check local availability and pricing though as these are U.K. models... which, according to the article should be available where you are now...

shop lady speaks good English and had uncommon technical skills!

I looked at that one but it didn't have enough memory - looks like the new model has been upgraded to 2GB so that could well be the go.

When did you buy it? J7 goes for 7900 normally, and can be found even in MV for 5900 nowadays. Sounds like you got screwed by the techy shop lady.

Regardless, the J7 (or any other Samsung) doesn't have a good price-to-spec ratio.

There are 2 models of J7 by the looks of it - the expensive one has more RAM and will be faster to use.

Anyone using a similar spec Sony Xperia?

As far as I know, only the J700F (SD615, 1.5GB RAM version) is currently sold in Thailand. The J710F (SD617, 2/3GB RAM version) didn't hit the stores yet. Neither will be "fast" to use. They're both on the relatively sluggish SnapDragon 615/617. Their display is not even FHD, and with a way low pixel density.

The Z5 mentioned above uses the aging SnapDragon 810. It's certainly faster than the 615/617, but for the price you should get much much more.

Which shop was it? Will have a look there when next in HH, anything will be 'faster' than the slab of sheit that I currently have.

The best ratio can be found with the Chinese brands. Note that pretty much all brands are actually made (=assembled) in China, including Apple and Samsung, so going for a Chinese brand isn't necessarily a problem, as long as you do your research.

I think the best value right now is the Xiaomi Redmi Note 3. SnapDragon 650 (easily beats the 810), FHD with 400+ PPI, an awesome 4000mAh battery that lasts 3 days, fingerprint sensor, 16/5MP cameras, dual SIM (second SIM slot can also be used for SD card). Comes in 32GB/3GB RAM and 16GB/2GB RAM versions. The first can be found in Thailand for around ~8300 baht, the second for ~6900 baht. Can be bought in China/India for around 6300 and 5200 baht respectively .

If you want a low priced flagship, the Mi5 sports the incredibly fast SnapDragon 820 (same as S7 and other flagships, and naturally beats the 650). It can be found for ~12,500 baht in Thailand.

Xiaomi ships a global version of its ROM that comes with Gapps (Google Play + Apps and services).

Samsung J7 meets your requirements and costs 8000bt.
Very difficult to root though, if you need to do that

Not sure how "free" that was. My J7 was sold as a 48Gb model from the official Samsung shop, which was made up of 16Gb internal plus the 32Gb SD

One thing worth mentioning, which may or may not be of significance, is that only one SIM card at a time can use 3/4G, the other is restricted to 2G. This was common amongst 'chinaphones' until a few years back, but they've since moved to chipsets that allow both SIMs to be on the 3/4G networks. I'm surprised Samsung are behind in this department.

If your looking for a price guide for mobile phone purchases in Thailand this may help. Mrs B needed a new phone after ingloriously slipping on an access ramp to the beach. Did the rounds of service providers in MV who offered a discount for lock in contract however managed to purchase same model phone in BKK without contract sunbstantially cheaper than that offered through the phone companies .
