Facebook confirms it collects data beyond users

Facebook, embattled in a scandal over the mishandling of user data, confirmed Monday that it also collected information from people beyond their social network use.

CEO Mark Zuckerberg has acknowledged that Facebook collects data beyond what users share on their profiles.

During heated hearings in Congress last week, CEO Mark Zuckerberg had already explained that Facebook collects data beyond what users share on their profiles.

"When you visit a site or app that uses our services, we receive information even if you're logged out or don't have a Facebook account," product management director David Baser said in a post on the social network's blog.

"This is because other apps and sites don't know who is using Facebook," he added, noting Facebook was also following up with Congress on a few dozen questions Zuckerberg was unable to answer at the time of the hearings.

Baser said "many" websites and apps use Facebook services to target content and ads, including via the social network's Like and Share buttons, when people use their Facebook account to log into another website or app and Facebook ads and measurement tools.

THE PUSH TO BREAK UP FACEBOOK JUST GOT SERIOUS
With Mark Zuckerberg’s head on the figurative chopping block last month, Senator Ted Cruz chose to spend his allotted four-minute question period demanding to know why Facebook, in his view, censors conservative speech. Cruz’s tirade illustrated the gulf that still exists between Facebook and the right, despite Facebook’s attempts to cozy up to Republicans. Nor has Zuckerberg, in the wake of the Cambridge Analytica scandal, managed to placate the left: on Monday, a coalition of progressive advocacy groups launched a six-figure ad campaign calling on the Federal Trade Commission to lop off parts of Facebook into their own separate entities and curtail Zuckerberg’s power.

The populist push is well timed. Less than half of the American public trusts Facebook to follow laws regarding privacy, and the F.T.C. has already opened one investigation into Facebook over Cambridge Analytica. Joseph Simons, the F.T.C.’s new director, who was sworn in earlier this month, seems relatively willing to take tech giants like Facebook to task. Yet the agency has been slow to take action—Simons, an anti-trust lawyer who has represented big tech firms like Microsoft and Sony, recently appointed a lawyer who has represented Facebook to a key consumer-protection position at the agency, and calls for action on an anti-trust front have so far gone unanswered.

Data protection rules come into effect today
The EU's so-called General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) has been blamed for a flood of spam emails and messages in recent weeks as firms rush to request the explicit consent of users to contact them.

Even though the rules were officially adopted two years ago, with a grace period until now to adapt to them, companies have been slow to act, resulting in a last-minute scramble this week.

Britain's data protection watchdog, the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO), said that its site had experienced "a few interruptions" as the deadline loomed, but said that "everything is working now".

Brussels insists that the laws will become a global benchmark for the protection of people's online information, particularly in the wake of the Facebook data harvesting scandal.

"The new rules will put the Europeans back in control of their data," said EU Justice Commissioner Vera Jourova.

"When it comes to personal data today, people are naked in an aquarium."

Facebook losing out to YouTube, Instagram and Snapchat among US teens

There could be a dozen or more takes on this and it's safe to say the same would apply to UK and EU teens. The most obvious is that they want to play and not read too much. The real question is will they migrate to FB as they get older, find a substitute such as a closed group, or go to some completely new format type that hasn't been introduced yet? Pete

Facebook admits privacy settings 'bug' affecting 14 million users
Facebook acknowledged Thursday a software glitch that changed the settings of some 14 million users, potentially making some posts public even if they were intended to be private.

The news marked the latest in a series of privacy embarrassments for the world's biggest social network, which has faced a firestorm over the hijacking of personal data on tens of millions of users and more recently for disclosures on data-sharing deals with smartphone makers.

OMG, IMHO Facebook have fcuk'd the system well and truly with their latest 'enhancement'.

On my system at least, there are several groups that I read. Within Groups, until now there have been 2 sorts available:
  • Top Posts - which always presents what Facebook wants you to read, so you see the same crap time, after time after time.
  • Latest Posts - which presents posts in chronological order so that you see stuff you've never seen before, first.
My Facebook now defaults to Top Posts, with no way to change it. I'm not going to waste my time wading through the same crap every time, whilst in search of something new.

Unless somebody can tell me how to change this crazy sort order, I'm out of there for everything except the pages I manage. Even then, if I want to make an announcement, there seems little point if Facebook is going to hide it. :banghead: :banghead: :banghead:

Too useful to cut all ties. I mean that I'm out of the group pages.

I guess it must be the same for everyone. I have the same choice as you do but always when I open the facebook in the morning the top posts come first. Then again, it's only one push of the button to change that so I'm not overly worried about that. For me the most valuable things on the facebook are: being in touch of my friends all over the world and getting tips for language teaching from relevant groups. There are also other groups I find to be a good source of information.

I've just cut the groups I am in to 1. The last 2 that went were the HH buy and sell stuff. In the UK these were good for the local community, but here 50% of those that try to sell their wares are scammers and shysters and nothing gets done even if you report it.

No BG, I get that on regular posts, and have been changing the same as you, and will continue to do so. Hence my statement:
Too useful to cut all ties. I mean that I'm out of the group pages.
I am talking within groups, and I no longer have a choice - its read what Facebook wants me to see, or see nothing.

I can't recall ever seeing anything like that. Is it just when you first login or is it there all of the time?

Edit - scrap that, it's just in groups and I'm down to two, not one as I mentioned earlier and tend to only view them in my 'home' page.
