Ordering From Alibaba
Ordering From Alibaba
Many people tell me that they regularly order from Alibaba. However, whenever I try to use the site, very competitive prices are usually qualified by statements such as 'minimum order quantity 300'.
I can never find my way past this. Many of the items I look for are not available in Hua Hin, mainly because there is no demand. So why would I want to buy 300?
I'm sure I must be being thick, but I just can not see how to buy small quantities. Their range of quirky items is much better than Lazada. Can anybody explain how to buy individual items please?

How about posting a link to an example of an item you're talking about?
Re: Ordering From Alibaba
OK, I said it was quirky (this is actually a gift for somebody else ). I would have no idea how to dispose of the surplus.

Re: Ordering From Alibaba
This is TOO EASY!
Give the one you want as a gift and the other 24 could be offered as is as "marital aids". If you wanted to do a little wood carving then they could easily be formed into a wooden phallus and sold as Buddha charms for protection against all enemies, foreign or domestic. Ghosts be gone.
300 to 500 baht a copy and Bob's your uncle. I bet he would like one too.

Interesting, thanks for the link. I haven't done any online ordering since I came to LOS, I'll ensure I read the whole thing before I order anything.
Re: Ordering From Alibaba
There is another site for ordering and caters for individual items. I have not used it but it may be worth exploring.

Nice try, and thank you Bluesky. Unfortunately I can not find the right item on that site.Bluesky wrote:There is another site for ordering and caters for individual items. I have not used it but it may be worth exploring.

Alibaba is the only place I can find them anywhere. There was even a shop in the Bluport basement that specialised in wooden goods. They were quite happy to provide guns etc, but were not interested in manufacturing dummy wooden knives.

Alibaba.com is for wholesalers. Aliexpress.com or similar (http://www.shops-in-china.com) would be better for small quantity purchases.
However, if this particular gift is for an enthusiasist or practitioner (not for decoration) then personally I only would consider original/quality stuff. Search http://www.seidoshop.com or http://tozandoshop.com for "tanto" and will see products starting around 500 Bht, some with free delivery.

Have you, or anyone else, had good (or bad) luck ordering?laser wrote:Alibaba.com is for wholesalers. Aliexpress.com or similar (http://www.shops-in-china.com) would be better for small quantity purchases.

Thank you laser for providing 2 excellent sites that I will pass on to the recipient of the gift - I'm sure he will use them.
In regard to the original enquiry, I received a PM, which reminded me that I have a very good friend in Udon Thani who visits Thailand every winter to carve Buddha images for temples. His work is really first class. I've asked him to manufacture the knives - he doesn't do shoddy work, so I am sure it will be man enough for the job..
As for Alibaba, it's nice to know that I wasn't missing something obvious.

Re: Ordering From Alibaba
^^ Agreed use China Post as they have their own customs clearance at Laksi. I have never worked out why but occasionally, I get charged 7 Baht on delivery for customs clearance but this is rare. Avoid using EMS from China as this goes through a different sorting and customs clearance procedure. Normally the goods end up in Chaeng Wattana sorting office and you need to go there to pay the duty and VAT before the parcel is released.

Re: Ordering From Alibaba
The 7 baht asked for by the postman is a post office delivery fee for small parcels over a certain weight (800 grams maybe???).

Thanks and it certainly makes sense but I have received a lot of parcels via China Post and it appears a lot more random than simply weight but perhaps they sometimes forget.hhinner wrote:The 7 baht asked for by the postman is a post office delivery fee for small parcels over a certain weight (800 grams maybe???).
Anyway it's a very small charge.
