Adobe Pro

Post by StevePIraq »

I previously had Adobe Pro for developing and editing Adobe documents, this is not just the PDF reader. The software has now died a death and I do not wish to pay the crazy cost for new software. Does anyone know an alternative free PDF full editor to download, or perhaps a shop that sells copy Adobe, not that I would ever think of purchasing an illegal copy.

Have a search for PDF-Pro 5.1 I used the Majorgeeks website as I needed one too. There are several there to choose from. I have recently needed to use PDF-Pro for my Immigration forms.

Many people 'lost' Adobe Acrobat as Adobe seems to delight in 'breaking' earlier versions of their software when OS changes - for me I lost 9.0 Pro when Windows 10 did their anniversary upgrade and I am sure when I get back to Thailand I will have lost my copy of Acrobat 8.0 Standard. Even after diligently searching for a solution to bring it back to life I ended up realizing I needed to move on. I searched for 'free' programs but didn't seem to find anything that was worth the cost so I purchased Nuance's Power PDF Standard 2.0 online from the company for USD 70 for a 2-computer license. A bit of a learning curve, but glad to leave Adobe and its corporate pricing behind.

My Adobe Pro died following a Windows 10 update, I contacted Microsoft support who remotely played with my computer however they advised their programs did not affect Adobe and told me to contact Adobe. No response from Adobe so far.

Well

I purchased a mackbook pro and an imac with legal copies of cs5 and all of a sudden they tell me that"power pc" is no longer supported. Dug out my old macbook that I only kept for spare parts and visitors to use internet if they did not bring a laptop. Works fine on cs2. Sometimes when people send me a pdf I just get a black screen????? Again legal software with auto updates turned on??????

Old software won't work on new operating system (OS), e.g. Win 10? The free-but-probably-too-complicated-for-y'all solution is VirtualBox (VB), free from Oracle. VB is just another program one can run their current OS. It doesn't replace the current OS.

Install VB on your current machine. Then install an older OS in VB. Then install the old software in the Older OS. So you could end up with something like:
Adobe Pro running in Win 7 running in VB running in Win 10

Newer versions of Microsoft Word include functionality to open and save as PDFs. I used this for my immigration forms and had no problems. Previously, I was an avid user of Adobe Acrobat Pro, but since Microsoft started including PDF file format functionality in their Office products I have stopped using Acrobat. I realize Acrobat has some ultra-advanced pdf publishing capabilities that Microsoft does not but I wasn't using those advanced features. Or, as others have stated there are many many free PDF software packages available by googling Free PDF software.

Office only gives the option to convert/print to pdf. The is no combine, extract, overwrite, share and comment functionality. I need far more than simple save as pdf. It is also quite difficult adapting to new software when you have used Adobe for so many years.

Some guys have provided options and I am really grateful however not all work with Windows 10 but I am still trying them all out

On the Adobe forums a guy described a way to fix Acrobat 8 under Win10.
http://forums.adobe.com/message/7999966#7999966
It seems that the key issue is to eradicate Reader DC. Adobe product are infamous of creating many hundreds of Registry keys and it's difficult to fully uninstall the mess they create. So much that they offer 'cleaner' utilities to their customers. IMO users only should install Adobe software using some dedicated uninstaller software (Revo and similar). This page can help with cleaning up the machine:

That way the poster could make his copy working again, only that could not update his existing version. Those who got burned with undesirable OS updates won't lose much trying the same.

For relatively simple and common tasks that fit my needs I checked a few alternatives.
Iceni Infix might be very good for those mainly interested in text replacement/translation. Master PDF resembles older Foxit Phantom versions, has an uncluttered look and menus but text editing is done line-by-line. Wondershare Elements is more polished in that aspect, since can conveniently edit paragraphs just like a word processor. The OCR uses the proven ABBY engine and was downloaded within the application (~270 MB). I tested it with a brochure (picture rather than text) pdf and worked OK.

Hi Laser, from that forum it seems there have been lots of problems with Adobe and Win 10, I am loath to go into my registry and start changing things so I think I will give that a miss for the time being.

I have started focusing on Wondershare Element, it just takes time to learn all the tricks to make it work well.

I wonder is MS preparing to launch it's own full PDF software and in the meant time trying to bugger up Adobe on Win 10.

^^ To a limited extent Microsoft has already an offering and Word 2013 might be your answer http://www.pcworld.com/article/2360959/ ... -word.html as it not only converts Word to PDF but also allows you to open PDF files to edit them

Damn I have office 2016 with Windows 10 and I had not seen that. I now see I can open a PDF doc in Word 16 and edit as long as it is not a scanned document. This allows simple editing but sometimes loses formatting. Fine for doing immigration forms and the likes. Down side is documents with graphs, complex tables etc get buggered up. Still this is a good option for basic stuff.
