3BB Access to Google

Post by hhinner »

Using 3BB I've been unable to access Google services, such as Gmail and YouTube, other than google.co.th since this morning. Using DTAC 3G/4G there's no problem. I've called 3BB call centre and they say they have a big problem with their access to Google's servers. This since about 10am.

Just wondering if any other ISP has similar problems.

Cheers.

Article lifted from a competing forum. If you want to read the original search "3bb no google access".

"3BB customers in Thailand were having problems accessing many websites on Saturday.

Believed to be the result of a large scale technical issue, users nationwide were affected.

The issued seemed to affect anyone trying to access the sites from a Thai IP address.

3BB customers using a VPN were still able to access the sites without problems.

Customers reported problems from locations including Pattaya, Udon Thani, Phuket, Hua Hin and Chiang Mai.

“Glad I saw your thread. I am in Chiang Mai using 3BB. Been having problems with Google services all morning, very hit and miss. Seems there is a gum up in the works somewhere”......

“Phuket down on 3bb. Vpn works fine,” wrote another.

At the time of writing the 3BB website was also offline."

OK. Large scale technical issue? Not credible to me. One ISP. One server farm. Large scale only in effect. Why not divert Google access to other Google sites? And google.co.th is OK. There will be conspiracy theories I think.

We've been having trouble with BBB Gmail all afternoon and evening. Other things are also not loading or very slow to load. Hopefully it will be fixed tomorrow. Never had any trouble with them in the year we've had BBB.

Ministry denies blocking attempt in 3BB meltdown

http://www.bangkokpost.com/news/general ... b-meltdown

Telecommunication authorities have dismissed rumours the inaccessibility to certain Google and Youtube services through an internet service provider on Saturday was their attempt to block content, saying it was merely a technical problem.

Somsak Khaosuwan, deputy permanent secretary and spokesman of the Digital Economy and Society Ministry, on Sunday said the inaccessibility was not the government's attempt to control political content on video-sharing website YouTube.

He referred to the very slow access or no access at all to Google-related websites -- from Google Search, YouTube and Google Drive to Play Store -- on Saturday by 3BB clients. Other websites can be accessed normally and other ISPs reportedly had no such problem.

The 14-hour outage has triggered the rumours, especially since 3BB did not provide any explanation to the problem and customers could not reach its support call centre. Some users also reported they could access the websites through virtual private networks or VPNs, which mask a user's IP address and location.

The lack of response and the fact that the websites could be accessed through VPNs fuelled speculation among social media users it might be a test of content-screening of some sort.

But the Digital Economy and Society Ministry insisted on Sunday it had never violated people's rights by cooperating with Google to screen inappropriate content. :lach:

Mr Somsak said if something needs to be removed offline, the ministry would seek a court order and coordinate it with Google, which owned YouTube, through the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) or by itself, he said.

He said the technical problem was in fact a maintenance service to improve access to the popular video service.
NBTC secretary-general Takorn Tantasith on Sunday tweeted the explanation on the incident by 3BB chief operating officer Yodchai Asawathongchai.

The ISP said in the statement the inaccessibility started at 9am on Saturday because an overseas team of Google conducted a repair and maintenance task.

"3BB was following up the issue closely with Google and the Google search service resumed for our clients at 12pm and YouTube at 11pm."
The ISP added it was waiting for more detailed explanations from Google.

Several Thai internet users have been suspicious of any glitches or anything out of the ordinary in their internet connections since authorities brought up the issue of the single gateway in 2014 in a bid to better control content even though the government said it had dropped it.

Out of interest, 3BB used to allow users to access sites such as the Daily Mail without using a VPN. Is that still the case?

^^ Not right now. But it's only a blank screen rather than the censored message, so could be just hanging waiting for a 3rd party site. The apps work fine though.

Nice that 3BB are trying to blame Google. Wonder if we'll hear from Google.

It could be a case of Google blocking 3BB servers. You saw the below article I posted on the TOT thread on April 25. Pete

I use 3bb and had trouble over the weekend accessing G-mail and Google news sites, but now (Monday am) all is back to normal.

The Daily Mail site loads perfectly well with no blockage or that infuriating Thai Government page.

NBTC: 3BB allowed to offer streaming service as remedy

Published: 8/05/2017 at 03:58 PM
Online news:

3BB, the internet service provider whose access to Google services was disrupted on Saturday, has been approved to offer a free one-month subscription of its media-streaming service as a remedy for its internet customers.

Takorn Tantasith, secretary-general of the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC), said on Monday Triple T Internet Co Ltd, which operates the 3BB brand, had submitted the proposal to offer its Monomaxxx media streaming service to the NBTC as a remedy after its customers could not access Google-owned websites and services including YouTube for up to 14 hours on Saturday.

The NBTC approved its proposal and the company could proceed with the offer immediately, Mr Takorn said.

However, 3BB has yet to officially make the announcement.

A Monomaxxx one-month package normally costs 129 baht a month.

According to its website, the service has a catalogue of Thai, Chinese, Korean and international movies and series, as well as sports and music programmes.

The service runs on PCs, mobile devices and smart TVs. The content can also be cast on normal TV screens using Google Chromecast or Android boxes.

^ The Gov so quick to approve compensation leads me to think they indeed may have had some fingers in the cause of the problem. Maybe I'm too suspicious? Pete
