I told a story on here way back about an Aussie friend who really likes his gin and tonic, to the tune of about a fifth a day. His teeth began to be badly damaged, not decay but simply deterioration, and found out from the doctor that such large quantities of tonic was causing it. Appears there is sugar in it, as well as something else which eats away the enamel. He's gone to a soda concoction now similar to what Francois posted. Pete

Pete, A while back when I was counting calories, I was surprised to learn just how much sugar (and calories) are in tonic. Of course in the States I had my G & T or V & T with diet Schweppes; but they've never sold that here.
My brain is like an Internet browser; 12 tabs are open and 5 of them are not responding, there's a GIF playing in an endless loop,... and where is that annoying music coming from?

Is a wonder he did not try Diet Tonic, other than Schwepps, Coles supermarkets make one.
Does not contain zero sugar but I think that it has a lots less

I like Vodka Tonic as well, but if you have some fresh limes available, try Vodka Soda and then squeeze fresh lime into it with plenty of ice. Is just as nice. I do not like lime or lemon floating in my drink but the fresh juice tastes great.

Hi HHAD members

Just had a report there are shortages everywhere in Phuket as well and all are blaming it on the floods but this persons just got back from Bangkok and there is absolutely everything in abundance there including Scweppes Tonic Water in every 7 eleven and every pub bar.So it is definately the wholesales faults cos Bangkok is awash with everything.

We are struggling also with root beer/diet coke and walls ice cream, trying times still at present folks

Cheers

I realise that right now HH denizens should be grateful for any tonic, but once normal supplies are available I know I for one would really appreciate being able to buy a diet version. I was a bit of a Schweppes snob, but after hassling Park'nShop here in Hong kong to stock their sugar-free version they started selling 250ml tins of sugar-free (Waitrose) tonic. It's not Schweppes but it's absolutely perfect, with the only downside being I keep convincing myself I'm being healthy as I pour yet another G & T and consequently feel crap the next day. My point is: if enough customers lobby a supermarket chain to provide a particular item (and obviously the store has to be confident we will buy enough to make it doable for them) then eventually it might listen and provide same. Does this tactic work with Tesco/Makro in Hua Hin, or am I being naive by even asking if we could perhaps make this happen?

MLS..no, I do not think you're being naive at all..I complained to Makro about 2 years ago about never having in stock the french-fries I needed..I told them many other items that I buy from them could be bought cheaper in HH without coming down to them at Pranburi..They took our complaint quite seriously, & assured us they would make an effort to get what we needed..(We were buying up to 60kgs of frozen f/fries each week from them + a s**t-load of other stuff). They even sent a handfull of their staff up to HH to check us out!
BUT..most of the suppliers to the bar-trade I feel would not go out of their way to accomodate your wishes
(bloody Ying-Yeong would'nt anyway)..they make you feel like they are doing YOU a favour by supplying you with your beers/spirits..ho-hum. But you DO have a valid point here..more and more tourists to HH would welcome a reduced sugar/sugar-free option..there's alot of diabetics out there that would be pleased also... chock-dee.. U.S.

I've been in the same situation a time or two Francois. Why wait? Just substitute the tonic for orange juice. Not quite the same, but rather nice... :D

Hi VS,

Thanks for the tip. We'll do it with fresh juice from squizzed oranges.

Or when the shortage is over, try adding some orange juice to the G&T - I have been doing it for years and find it very refreshing!!

So gentlemen, with your permission, I will write something on the subject. Tonic water can be purchased at the small shop on the Soi 94. If you go from Petchkasem Rd, cross the railway, on the right-hand side after the restaurant Oy placed Lanla Bar and near is one mor bar, so that's next door to this is the mini shop you can buy tonic. In general it placed between the Lanla Bar and Bady's bar. Price is 20 baht per tin can 325 ml.
