Cheap Local Expat Restaurants

I was wondering if anyone has compiled a list of cheap local expat Thai restaurants in their neighborhood. I am looking for restaurants that a tourist would not find.

There are so many great Thai restaurants in Hua Hin. Just drive about and look for the busiest restaurants, where the Thai people go. Certainly help if you have a Thai person to guide you but even if you don't, you can still go in and see how you get on. 2 of my favourites are Makam and Nong Mei. Very hard to find if you don't know where to go but great food.

Why don't you go out of your door and turn L or R and try all the local ones to you.Be a leader, rather than following others. The fact that your here in Thailand shows you must have an adventurous spirit! You might find a little gem of a place. I've found its quite difficult to find bad Thai food in small places.

Just ask any Thai person for the best place for a particular dish and they will know. Take NOKYAI advice and you will find many. If you want take away hit the markets and the busiest stalls. Too many to mention but we have been getting a lot of take aways from the food court behind the 7/11 just over the railway track in soi 88 recently. 30 satay sticks with all the sauces and salad 100 bt and the tenderest I have ever had. Plenty of other good stuff as well but its a bitch to park less than 200m away.

Some posters are not understanding what I was asking for? I should explain my self better.

To make it clear I do not live in Thailand. I am presently in Canada in about three feet of snow. I however do visit Hua Hin every year as I have a home there.

In around my home there are plenty of Thai restaurants and street food. I have been to many places along Canal Road and further back into the smaller sois. What I was wanting is for local expats who live in Hua Hin permanently to list some of their favorite restaurants that a seasonal tourist would probably never find. For example, Burger 2, is a real good inexpensive Thai Farang restaurant in Samor Prong.

Another favorite place I like to visit is on Phetkasem north of Hua Hin hospital called Ahaan Pa, (Jungle Curry Restaurant). They serve very authentic and extremely spicy Thai dishes. The Jungle Deer curry is a specialty. The sign for the restaurant is only in Thai.

I would like to know of some other gems to try on my next visit in three weeks.

One of my favorites for Thai and Farang food is the Khorat restaurant. My Thai wife says their Thai and Isaan food is very authentic. For me, the Beef Stroganoff is a clear hit. It is located on a small side soi to Soi 94. Go west acroos the track and about 2-300 meters up, go left. There is a sign, one among many, showing to the restaurant.

PS: You mention "cheap". Cheap is relative. If you are looking for real cheap, the food carts along Petkasem may be your preference. The above has a wide selection, I believe the main courses range from about THB 100 and up. But then again, when I´m not in the posh restaurants I don't really care whether it's THB 100 or 300 if the food is good.

For me Kor Sor remains one of the top places around. Beautiful setting; good food, and very reasonable prices. Very few tourists generally but can be busy on weekends when Thais and/or Koreans arrive in tour buses.


There's also another place which has recently opened on soi 6. Around lunch time in gets really busy, mostly with Thais and expats who live in the area. By far the busiest place in the area so they must be doing something right. Head over the bridge in soi 6; take a right and continue past the Bofai Temple; about 500 to 600 meters on you'll see it on your left. Closed on Fridays.


If you like Isaan food, there's also a good place about 200 meters past the temple on your right, call the Isaan Hut. Sort of just a garden restaurant with good food, although not much of a menu to choose from.

Heading further up, just past Emerald Hill, you'll come to another Farang owned place on your left. Very reasonable prices and good food. Most customers are Thai/Farang couples and food is cooked/prepared by a Thai woman who has years of experience making Farang dishes. Only opens in the evenings, and is closed on Tuesdays.

I have family and friends coming soon for a couple of weeks and have Kor Sor earmarked for a visit. Does it have a pool and relaxation area? I'm thinking off a Thai lunch and a spell basking in the sun? Additionally, is it best to book? We'd be looking at a Sunday, Monday or Tuesday

If you open the website and look at some of the photos your questions would have been answered - yes they do have an infinity type pool as well as a lake and lots of areas to relax, in fact the setting looks superb. Is it best to book, we'll surely the answer is obvious......yes, that way you know your guaranteed a table

It seems to be one of those places that dropped from my radar as there are so many new places opening up. I'm glad I poppped in the other day and will definitely be going back.

To be honest, I never even bothered checking out the menu or prices at first because I just assumed it would be a very expensive place given the superb setting. If I remember correctly, it was only after HHF went there and posted on here that I decided to give it a try. I was truly pleasantly surprised. It's certainly not the cheapest place in town, but very reasonable. Not sure about accommodation costs though.

Btw, I think there is a 50 baht fee for use of the pool, but maybe that doesn't apply if you are there as a customer.

My thinking was that for the cost of a 2 baht phonecall, you can have peace of mind that you have a table booked, whether it's busy or not.
