Tom Yum Kung

Post by huahin4ever »

I've always been crazy for Tom Yum Kung and have tried many, many restaurants in Hua Hin. Some good, some average and some very bad. But my no. 1 restaurant for Tom Yum Kung is by far Ratama! It is just fantastic! The news is that the owner has opened up a restaurant in BKK too, and due to this he is only at Ratama Saturdays and Sundays. He is the cook that makes the fabulous Tom Yum Kung! Went there tonight and he never failed to deliver, again!

It might taste good, but to me at least, it doesn't look that appetising.

Yuck, is all I can say on first impression. Looks like the cat threw something up. I'm not a fan of Thai food but when forced to eat a Tom Yum, I prefer it served with some comparison to the national dish.

Saying this, as I don't particularly like Thai food, the dish may be an improvement on the standard Tom Yum. I still can't understand how a westerner can praise the local food here (bar it being cheap) given the quality of food we get in our homelands. I must spend a small fortune on sandwiches each month to make sure I'm not stuck with a Thai dish.

Each to their own I guess.

It's because I can remember being fed things like spam fritters, boiled potatoes and cabbage when I was in the military.

Back in the uk I would (once left to my own devices at 18 - cheers dad :D) live very cheaply food wise. My shared apartment room was costing me about 500 quid a month (rip-off Reading) so I had to strip all other outgoings accordingly. I lived on cheap meat, potatoes, cheese, beans, bread and veg. Cost nothing really and a lot bloody better, and much more hygienic, than the rubbish they serve up here.

Edit: I mean, come on now.... :D

... Look at the dish offered in the op, then look at the dish (below) which is the cheapest of cheap food in the uk. The bottom rung of the ladder. I know which one I'd rather have.

I have to say that the OP was the least appealing picture of Tom Yam I have ever seen. It still looks 10 times better than the latest offering! :)

Looks can be deceived they say! Take my word for it, it tastes like heaven, if you like Tom Yum Kung. Normally most Thais like my wife and her friends, order it as clear soup, but as you see on the picture I prefer mine with milk/coconut milk /Carnation. That's why the look may not be as appealing, but nothing wrong with the taste!

That might suit your taste, but if they put that in front of Mrs BB, she would complain, saying that she'd ordered Tom Yung Kung.

I like Tom Kha Kung which is pretty much a coconut milk spicy soup but it's probably not as hot as adding the stuff to Tom Yum. I'd prefer either to GLC's baked beans to be honest, when you've seen Navy cooks on an aircraft carrier opening catering tins of them for hours on end, you tend to go off them a bit.

Looks can be deciving but I think I would rather stick to the second dish of Tom Yum.

As for Spam I don't mind a Spam fritter from the chippy sometimes reminds me of my childhood.

GLCQ living in a country where you don't even like the food must be hell but if I was forced to eat Thai sandwiches that would make me dislike Thailand also can't stand Thai bread.

GLCQ your post on this thread created a virus on my machine (see Digital Surgery). It was something to do with you downloading some link referring to a baked potato. Please refrain from posting pornographic farang food links on the forum as my uncle AVAST does not like it

ps.............Did anybody else experience a warning?
