Some enjoy to dress up and go out to do something fancy once in a while.

I think what op is alluding to is some hotels you book over the new years period make you also pay for their gala dinner.
I booked a hotel in chiang mai a few years ago it was 1500bht per night over the new years period and they also charged me a compulsory 1200bht to attend their new year gala night.

Nothing new. 20 years ago hotels were charging compulsory gala dinner prices whether you attended or not.

Unless it's a 5* hotel I will always avoid the gala dinners. Ok, you have paid for them, no choice but the quality of the food and service is generally in inverse proportion to the number of guests. You really don't have much choice but to treat the charge as a room surcharge for NY.

I'm staying at the pavilion this New Year's Eve, the booking States its 500 b compulsory, though will try to get round it as the wife won't eat western food and I spend enough time playing dress up during the week
When nosy expats ask how can i live here without working, i reply, 'well, while you worked hard for 50 years, i worked smart for 5 years' :D

hotels gala dinners why

This is just a friendly heads up for everybody traveling to Thailand this holiday season.

Many hotels in resort areas like Phuket, Samui, Hua Hin, Pattaya and many others- not so much in Bangkok- have what they call compulsory or mandatory gala dinners on the 31st of December.

The most expensive Ive seen is THB10500 USD350 at the Sheraton Pattaya. That is per registered guest This also includes kids, however some places will only charge you half price for children up to 12 years of age.

Its not compulsory in the sense that they are going to lock you in the hotel and watch you eat and demand that you have fun, the charge however is compulsory.

As someone on a forum discussion elsewhere quipped, they dont care if you eat attend the dinner, they only care if you pay.

So if you are booked into a hotel this NYE, be sure to check the fine print so you wont be in for an unpleasant surprise first thing next year.
