Correct Spitfire, almost any beer made outside Thailand is better than all of the Thai brands.Spitfire wrote:All Thai beer is garbage....it's just that you end up getting used to crap beer so you eventually surrender to one aweful beer company or another.
That said, my answer to the op is that Beer Chang (the original, not export or draft or whatever the new beer of the month is from them) has more flavor than the other Thai beers. I guess it can be argued that in a comparison of bad beers, more flavor is a negative, but I found Chang to be the only one that didn't taste stale and watered down.
Admittedly, I drank Beer Lao and other imported beers at home, but when out in a Thai bar or restaurant I usually stuck with Beer Chang (classic, large bottle).
My brain is like an Internet browser; 12 tabs are open and 5 of them are not responding, there's a GIF playing in an endless loop,... and where is that annoying music coming from?

It didn't become #1 by being a good beer either. It earns it spot with exhaustive marketing and strong-arming other brands out of the market. Have you noticed the food court on 88 won't sell you anything but Chang
(if only Thailand had been colonised by the French and learnt how to brew)
The bars sell Leo, Singha, Chang, Heineken and maybe others.

Re: Why do you drink Chang beer?
First post for ages! Man! ...warning it becomes a bit long....zzzzzzz
Being a Geordie ill drink anything...
Drank the old Chang classic ( brown bottle wife beater ) on holidays here
In the early 2000s it was all over I remember...some bottles were mega strong..
some not so...but it was part of the holiday...after 49 miserable weeks of work in the UK.
it used to be 6.7%...sure it used to say at least 6.7% as well hahaha...
Lived here 7 years now...tried all the beers...i'm easily pleased...of course...
Only Singh I cant drink...tried a bottle last year first time for over 10 years...still didn't like it.
I went through phases of drinking them all..
Leo / Red Horse / Cheers Blue / Cheers Red / Cheers Black / Hein / Archers /
Lao / Lao Dark smalls / anything else in the supermarket cheap or expensive / ill try...hahaha...
But I remember the night the missus said ..that Chang bottle is green...
as I was drinking one Friday night at the computer...hahaha...I hadn't even had a sup yet.
yes it was..Green! New Chang Classic ... totally different taste...im used to it now of course.
But over night they dumped Chang Export / Draught / Lite and Original Classic...
Never had lite of course! hahaha...but Export and Draught were ok!
I sure theres good reason for it...less alco % wise and a green bottle
( green to look more upmarket? or the beer stays fresh for longer? )
Last weekend in Bluport...first ever visit...I was checking the beers out for xmas time..
The sales lass said...that Chang has been changed (changd?) again and been lowered to 5%
( I thought it was 5% already?)
Not that it bothers me...maybe its still too strong for the locals....
Chang and the Chang girls are ok..............just not the chang overs.
But I was away in Laos and we were all Drinking Big Beer Laos ...
boy it was good. and only 33 baht at the restaurant we were at.
Best beer ive had here.
But it will be Chang over Xmas.
ALL the best

Re: Why do you drink Chang beer?
I always describe the taste of Thai beer (especially Chang) to my English friends as "industrial." Having said that, after living here for 3 years I got used to it.
After returning from England recently after 2 weeks of drinking local draught real ale, I've lost my some of my enthusiasm for Thai beer.
Of course, each to his own... Thais are used to drinking their local beers and are never going to fork out B140 for a bottle of Fuller's from the UK or Erdinger from Germany.
(If I owned a bar in HH I would stock some imported beers to satisfy the cravings of people like me!)
P.S. Why are they continually messing about with the Strength of Chang? Going back a few years it was 6.4%, then 5.5% and 5.3%. This week in 7-11 I checked again and it was 5.2%!

Tax, I think. Can't remember exactly when but the moral majority decided that Thailand was getting off its nuts on pretty strong beer.Chazz14 wrote:I always describe the taste of Thai beer (especially Chang) to my English friends as "industrial." And Chang was getting some export sales - Everton etc. The UK also tax imported stronger beers more, so maybe the brewery thought to themselves that it was overall, world wide, just worth while toning down the strength a little?
