Bomb disposal experts were called to the Soi 6 area of Hua Hin on Monday morning following the discovery of an object which locals said looked like an explosive device.

Local police and military officials attended the scene next to railway line on Soi 6 where they found an M18 smoke grenade, as used by the US Army, next to some garbage bins.

Despite sealing off the area, the device was found not to be dangerous.

Police have launched an investigation to try and the owner of the smoke grenade.

If this photo is for real and maybe it is, but doesn't bomb squads in this country wear any kind of protection gear?
No wonder why so many soldiers in the deep south return home in coffins.
Shame on you Thai fuc... politicians.

Yes, bomb disposal units do have protective gear, but I would imagine it is only donned if deemed necessary.

As a matter of interest, do British and other nationality Sappers deployed to the Middle East use fancy dress when sweeping for, or lifting mines?

I'm just curious because during the South African Angolan bush war, sappers never wore any sort of protective gear, including myself. I can only thank God that we never had to in that heat. While protective gear might help in the case of a small explosive device, it certainly would not help in the least if large mine blew up in your face.

And while we are on the subject of mines, why the hell were the British supplying the commies with mines in Angola? :tsk: :tsk:

I've only ever been involved in one real life suspect package drama. There was a suspect package found inside a railway truck I was checking inside the naval base - wires were clearly visible. This was at the height of IRA terrorism.

The bomb squad really swung into action, all the gear, robots etc.

In the end it was a case of, "I only said blow the bloody doors off," but one of the more interesting days at the office. What an explosion!!! Generated by a robot in the end, I hasten to add.
I would imagine it is only donned if deemed necessary.
How do you know if it's necessary, without a first hand close-up inspection?

Actually, in the example above, I had to inform the boss first off. Rather than call the bomb squad and look stupid if it was just a take-away, he did his own inspection first - dressed in his suit, and prodding the package with his pen. Hilarious when I think back. We could have ended up with 50 bosses had he prodded the wrong bit.

[Edit] No robots were harmed in the above story.

Many years ago in Nakhon Pathom a bomb was found at the Social Security office not far from our house. There was a lot of activity and the cops were called. One of the cops was encouraged by the local press to lift the lid of the box for a photo shoot. Boooom!!!

This has really got me thinking now. Do sappers deployed to places like Africa and the Middle East now wear protective gear and use robots every time they find a landmine? I seriously doubt it but I could be wrong. Maybe things have changed. Of course, I also realize that there is a big difference between a landmine and a bomb even though both are explosive devices.

Reminds me of the comic actions and thoughts when faced with what could be a disastrous situation.
Many years ago on a certain RAF base I was called by the Orderly Officer to assist in a suspect IED.
A brief case found in the flying clothing section.
The officer decided to remove it to the firing range, my logic said if this idiot could move it, it did not have a trembler and as 12 hrs had passed no crude timer.
So I agreed to x-ray the brief case, taking 3 shots at different times and intensities, all behind the safety of a blast wall.
On developing the shots it was apparent that the briefcase contained office equipment. One shot identified the owner from an engraved plastic, desk name stand, Flt Sgt M..... (lucky to hit the right density) he happened to be my next door neighbour in MQs.
Never heard the of any subsequent follow up (sure it would just be a slap on the wrist) until a member of his section called for the x-ray film, which he then used as a negative and made into a framed photo, presented to the Flt Sgt at his end of service, demob party.

I friend of mine was a UK MP and was on the N of I committee. He went on a speaking engagement in the N of England. and drank too much at a house where he went for dinner, so they put him to bed. The next day he returned to London and asked the hotel where he had booked in, to parcel his stuff and send it to the H of C. The parcel arrived. The police heard some ticking, it was his alarm clock. They X-rayed it, saw the wires of his electric shaver--- they called the army, who took it away and exploded it, blowing his pajamas all over the south of England.
