Prince Andrew visits tsunami-hit Thailand
From correspondents in Bangkok

April 25, 2005

PRINCE Andrew began an official three-day visit to Thailand today to thank the kingdom for helping Britons caught up in December's tsunami disaster.

Andrew, who is fourth in line to the throne, was due to visit the British embassy and the British Council in Bangkok before heading to the seaside resort town of Hua Hin for an audience with King Bhumibol Adulyadej.

Tomorrow he is scheduled to travel to the resort island of Phuket, one of six provinces hit by the December 26 tsunami that killed nearly 5,400 people in Thailand, roughly half of them believed to be foreign holidaymakers. Britain says 78 Britons were among the kingdom's dead.

Andrew is due to meet with hospital staff and medical officials from the tsunami zone at a Phuket hospital, as well as to inspect boats donated to fishermen by Britain's Royal Thames Yacht Club, the British embassy said.

He is also expected to lay a wreath at the Wall of Remembrance Memorial to tsunami victims, and to receive a briefing on ongoing efforts to identify the bodies of those killed in the disaster.
