Playing cards now are between 300 - 500 baht. God knows what they'll be with the new tax. Now I understand why 'er indoors bought a couple of dozen packs at the border when we were leaving Laos. I think she paid 100 or so for ten packs!

Well if all the news coming from various sources today is true, a large bottle of Chang will be cheaper in London. Most supermarkets are selling large Singha and Chang at 2 quid or less. Buy half a dozen and it comes down to around 1.50
Must ask my daughter to bring some Thai beer the next time she visits!!

Let's see what happens when they suddenly realize that recreational and some hardcore drugs have become cheaper than booze. I would imagine a lot of gasping and fart noises will be heard. :banghead:

Time to start buying those 10 liter boxes of wine from Tesco (Mont Clair) as seems the best deal around now. Beer is about to get expensive, especially if you are drinking out in town. Guess the brief visit tourist 2 week types won't care but foreign residents and the locals will.

"Tesco (Mont Clair)"...that's the stuff that inspired my posting in the 2005-2010 era. It was fun for a while until you start to swill it like beer. It really isn't that bad from the first glass. Pete

To tourists a pint is cheaper than back home-- 170-220b in US and Canada and i hear about 160b in UK and tourists don't think too much about prices anyway.

Well after tomorrow, a pint here is not going to be cheaper than 'back home'. But when you're on a 2 week holiday, who cares!

It really is pathetic that the day before and today (day of implementation) nobody knows what the tax increases will be on each thing...so Thailand.

Been hearing all kinds of figures like 20 baht a pack of cigarettes and 20 baht a bottle of beer and looks like wine might take a huge hit.

I can imagine the large beer brewing family megacorps will have had their say about beer not getting whacked too much and it's interesting that the tax will be collected at wholesale and not at the brewery, so could be some wiggle room there for the brewers to price as they see fit before tax comes in.

Tax things too much and you end up getting less tax, plus annoying a large section of the people who's main avenue of escape from a woefully unfair and discriminatory society which is a few drinks after their daily slavery.

Wonder how long it will take before they have to back peddle on this one? Probably when the bootlegging starts becoming rampant as that's probably all they will achieve (and quickly) and it's not as if the locals are very law abidingly responsible when it comes to an opportunity to make good profit.

Or, you never know, maybe it's all gone quiet and no-one knows anything because they are already watering down the tax proposal because of all the negative reaction and need to abracadabra a new tax % level at short notice.

Is the hike coming into effect from tomorrow? I thought it was today, but I stocked up on beer, wine and cigarettes at the usual prices at 12:00 in Tesco.

Looks like some tax ministry official has come out and said something finally. Hopefully not as bad as thought, maybe they did a quick rethink at the last minute.

Still a few questions though to be clarified which I'm sure will happen soon enough.

Edit - Like the way they throw green tea (oddly) and coffee in for good measure too.

Based on that article one would expect no change at your local bar for a bottle of beer which only increases 2.66Baht.

If would be good if we can get some feedback over the next weeks as to how much bars are increasing prices. A normal commercial practice is to "round up" so people could see a 5 or 10 baht increase per bottle? We'll see.....Pete

Yes Pete...probably so. If that Nation report is correct, then maybe 10 baht increase on a beer in a bar and maybe a 3-5 baht increase in shops.

But a can will only increase by 50 satang. Why the difference?
