Thailand steps up security for tsunami commemorative event

PHUKET, Dec 19 (TNA) -

Security will be tightened for more than 9,000 guests expected to attend events marking the first tsunami anniversary on December 26 in this Andaman coastal province, a senior police said on Monday.

Pol. Maj. Gen. Thawat Boonfuang, deputy commissioner of provincial police region 8 chaired a meeting today to discuss a detailed security plan for dignitaries, local and foreign guests.

The move coincided with a special travel advisory issued Monday by Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade on its website warning that Thailand's memorial events could be at risk of a terrorist attack.

"Australians considering travelling to Thailand for tsunami memorial events are reminded that we advise Australians in Thailand to exercise a high decree of caution because of the high threat of terrorist attack," it said.

"We continue to receive reports that terrorists are planning attacks against a range of targets, including places frequented by foreigners," the special travel advisory warned.

Police said security will be stepped up on land, sea and air at the areas designated to hold commemorative events in Phuket, Phangnga and Krabi provinces.

Helicoptors and marine police boats will patrol the waters surrounding Khao Lak, the main venue of the events.

Additional security forces will also be mobilised from the southern border provinces of Yala, Pattani and Narathiwat to ensure safety of the attendants.

The tsunami struck Thailand's six Andaman coastal provinces on December 26th last year, leaving 5,395 people dead. Many of the victims were foreign holidaymakers staying at beach resorts in Phang Nga's Khao Lak district.
I intend to live forever - so far so good.
