2. Do the horses still crap on the beach?
I've read a travel book from 1922 where some Englishmen traveling on the railway down to Singapore stopped off at Hua Hin and took a horse ride on the beach so it's been going on for some time.

The reason for my first visit to Hua Him in 1979 was to stay in what was then the Railway Hotel, a fabulous colonial relic at the time .

^Still here and still a colonial relic, albeit refurbished and expensive and now owned by the Sofitel chain.

I wish I could have seen Hua Hin in 1979, although the changes would probably have pissed me off even more than the ones since 2003... :D
My brain is like an Internet browser; 12 tabs are open and 5 of them are not responding, there's a GIF playing in an endless loop,... and where is that annoying music coming from?

That hotel was used in the filming of the movie "The Killing Fields" as a hotel in Phnom Phen which was made not much later in the early eighties.

Hua Hin beach vendors warned of probation if they still leave items on beach
Vendors on the beach in Hua Hin, Prachuap Khiri Khan, have been found to continue to violate an agreement with authorities who have been trying to clear the beaches at tourism hot spots around Thailand of unsightly objects and structures as well as avoiding activities deemed unfavorable to tourism.

Phonchai Thomkrachang, chief district officer of Hua Hin, in his capacity as the head of the re-organizing committee for Hua Hin district's beach, has met with 22 beach vendors who are still in violation of the regulations demanding they completely remove their belongings from the beach at the end of the day. According to the vendors, they did not remove their belongings everyday because of the difficulty in removing all the items. The authorities told the vendors to strictly comply with the agreement and warned that they would be put on probation if they continued to breach the agreement.

According to the district chief of Hua Hin, the re-organization drive is aimed at improving orderliness at the beach to make the famous tourism town of Hua Hin more attractive to visitors.

It will be real interesting to see if there are many complaints from tourists during the high season. Will they like it, hate it, have no opinion? Please post up what you hear/observe over the next 5 months.

I guess I'm stupid, or just lazy, but exactly what is the difference?

It sounds to me that the beach-vendors suffer same-same as the bars..MiB come round..then bars have to close at 12.00...3 wks later after some 'negotiation' (tea money up 10/15%) lo & behold 2am closing again!
If PKK big-wigs want to clean up HH beach start by removing or re-locating the horses.

Do horses still crap on the beach? Yes. But horse porta potties will arrive soon. Horse owners do pick up poop & put in plastic bags. Then leave with rest of garbage & dead jelly fishes for the tide. Too much to hope for garbage bins from the powers that be. I hope the horses stay - kiddies love their rides, owners try to earn a living wage. Also hope umbrellas & snack places return so beach is other than boring garbage dump. :D

Well I'm in Patong at the moment and I was looking forward to a seat, table and brolly on the beach, but there's nothing here - perhaps its always been that way? So it's a mat on the beach and if you want shade, the trees at the top of the beach will have to do. I didn't stay long.

Caller, maybe they have to close on Wednesdays, the same as Hua Hin vendors do ?
