It's just been announced on BBC news that the two Burmese defendants have been found guilty and sentenced to death - not sure what the appeal options are?

Game-over for these two poor souls....
Sad day for justice but hardly a surprise.... would have rocked too many waves and faces lost on a grand scale if the verdict was any different.

Edit: Beat me to it Dannie Boy.

Re: Tourists murdered on Koh Tao
totally disgusting, I hope the western media goes to town on it, but as we know the Thais don't give a f*** about what we or the western media think about this sort of corrupt nonsense. And they also know that even the media will move on to other stories ina week or so.
Re: Tourists murdered on Koh Tao
The brother of one of the victims has stated justice has been done or similar in the press today so I guess we won't hear too many protestations from the UK.

I fear that wealth, power and convenience, once again, triumph, over truth and justice.

It puts a bit of a damper on Christmas spirit if you let it.
My mind keeps going back to the fact that we get substandard journalism here. Nothing is written in depth because they don't know how to do it, at least in English. There is no investigative reporting to the degree that's seen elsewhere. With this case from the beginning we got a mishmash of conflicting opinions, what were said to be facts, and authoritative statements with no followup. Not one publication tied everything together saying, "Okay, this is what we have and this is what happened or didn't happen based upon the evidence...."
To come to any conclusion we as readers had to piece together dozens of fragmented stories and interviews over a period of many months. They could be guilty as hell but many of us think they're not because that's the slant most stories have taken from the beginning.
Publication of the verdict in English stating how the verdict was arrived at would be most welcome, but we'll never see it. I hope at least the parents of the slain and the accused are able to see and study it.
Let's see what comes out of the appeal process. Peace to men of good will, and lets now enjoy our holiday celebrations. Pete

The two most critical news articles I've read:

My brain is like an Internet browser; 12 tabs are open and 5 of them are not responding, there's a GIF playing in an endless loop,... and where is that annoying music coming from?
Re: Tourists murdered on Koh Tao
I feel so sorry for both the victims' families.
Apart from the horrendous loss which they have been forced to endure, they must also have read all the reports regarding the bizarre saga of the investigation culminating in the less than comprehensive trial...
I know that TIT, but like Pete, I felt really down after I read the news

Beside the loss of their children, I hope that those two families will live with the burden of two innocents being sentenced.

My sister in the UK e-mailed me today..in her mail she told me nearly all the Uk newspapers are saying the Burmese boys WERE scapegoats, & go on to talk about the evidence mish-mash..Well done Thailand, yet more bad press in Europe.
Re: Tourists murdered on Koh Tao
It's really hard for them to do anything else when it's patently obvious that the shortcomings of the investigation from DNA sampling, the interviewing or not of suspects and witnesses, evidence not being secured, other evidence missing, the evidence of an expert DNA witness for the defence and so on, would have meant the case never going to Court in the first place anywhere that has a half-decent judicial system, which Thailand clearly doesn't have.usual suspect wrote:My sister in the UK e-mailed me today..in her mail she told me nearly all the Uk newspapers are saying the Burmese boys WERE scapegoats, & go on to talk about the evidence mish-mash..Well done Thailand, yet more bad press in Europe.

An active democracy requires a number of factors, two of the most important being an independent judiciary and a free press. This series of events is lamentable although nobody could be surprised.
