Thailand tourism situation
Re: Thailand tourist slump continues
I have been searching airlines recently, and Thai was wanting a third more than many airlines, and double what I ended up paying. I think greed is also a major factor - they only rate as an average airline in my book also.

I was in Bkk for three days last week. The hotel we were in seemed pretty empty. Had the pool to myself for two lengthy sessions and only saw a handful of other guests. Probably stayed at this hotel a dozen times in the last 6-months and it was as quiet as I have seen it. Guests are generally western, Korean or Thai (from the owner).

How do the tourist season proceed in Hua Hin. Is it cramped both on beaches and on the roads there also? I was just in Phuket for three days and at least the beach I went to for a swim was pretty full by the time I left just before noon, and the traffic was jammed from dawn to dusk.
Re: Thailand tourist slump continues
I don't do the bar scene, but Hua Hin has been manic for a couple of weeks over the festive period, with everywhere too busy for my liking. Thankfully, everything has calmed down again since Monday.

Came through Swampypoom yesterday, every tourist was asked to fill in their local addresses, no exception. Two girls at the head of the queue would stop everyone and check the arrival card before you even got to line up. Sign of the times, perhaps?

AS for the posts about THAI airline. I saw some figures about staff/flights and staff/passenger mile andThai is hugely over-staffed compared to S'pore airline. Apparently THAI head office is a kind of daytime retirement home for Air Force senior officers.

??? Unless I'm missing something, hasn't this *always* been the case?VincentD wrote:Came through Swampypoom yesterday, every tourist was asked to fill in their local addresses, no exception. Yes, that has always been the case, but like any govt form the trick is to never leave an empty box, Just write that you are staying at any hotel whose name crosses your mind and it will be passed. It used to be the case that every hotel had to inform the police of their guest list every night, but I believe tbat that has stopped. You can imagine how much paper that nobody ever read that that generated.
Re: Thailand tourist slump continues
It is still the case, but as with everything here, rules and enforcement vary from province to province. In Chumphon now you cannot check in anywhere without a passport because they have to inform the police, in Prachuap it is a different story.oakdale160 wrote: It used to be the case that every hotel had to inform the police of their guest list every night, but I believe tbat that has stopped.

I like Thailand. They have draconian laws that are not followed so much. Since I got my Thai drivers license I just give hotels that unless they really push for passport. I drove around without a license plate for six weeks. Right through check points. No problem. Speed past police stations and act just like the Thais who could give a flying F what the police think. Coming from California it is like there are no police.

Arrived at Suvarnabhumi yesterday at 14:30 What I have never seen before: there was no queue at immigration. I just could choose one of the free officers and was through in 1 minute. But officially the number of tourists is always increasing.

I'm heading back out at the end of next week and I hope it's the same!pitsch wrote:Arrived at Suvarnabhumi yesterday at 14:30 What I have never seen before: there was no queue at immigration. I just could choose one of the free officers and was through in 1 minute....

Thats a strange attitude, and should you ever get hauled in by the police you may very well wish that you were back in California, (although of late the US police force have little to be proud of.)JamesWest wrote:I like Thailand. In an ideal society one should fear the law and not the police. In Thailand it is the police that are feared, not the law.
