87 street racers caught in Hua Hin

PRACHUAP KHIRI KHAN- A total of 87 dek waen street racers, many of them minors, were arrested and 78 modified racing motorcycles seized from them in Hua Hin in the early hours of Saturday.

A combined team of police, soldiers and rescue workers rounded up teen motorcycle racers who turned a newly built bypass route into their racing track at around 1.30am on Saturday.

Hua Na bypass road, which was recently built and opened, became popular among street racers who often raced on it on Friday and Saturday nights, causing nuisance to local residents, said police.

Officers used four cars, with signal lights on, to drive along a road heading to the bypass road and two six-wheel trucks to block the bypass road.

Upon seeing the police vehicles, street racers on the road fled in panic. Some made a U-turn, while others abandoned their bikes to hide in roadside pineapple plantations.

Officers swiftly moved in to round up those racers. A total of 87 teenagers were caught, 78 of whom were male. However, some managed to flee. Among those arrested included 56 youths aged under 18. A total of 78 modified bikes were confiscated from them.

The suspects were later handed over to Hua Hin police for legal action and their parents would be called to acknowledge the conduct of their children.

Wonder what sort of an innovative explanations those that managed to flee after dumping their bikes will give to their parents. Ultimately what will the parents say to the Police now in possession of the dumped bike regarding the whereabouts of of their children?

Modifications cost money, so one must wonder whether the parents are also complicit in the actions of their children? I, for one, would have a very dim view if my son went out and did something like that.
Have also met some people who have difficulty just keeping their motos in running condition, so perhaps if the police just hung on to the motos for a month or two it might teach the parents of these so-called 'dek waen' a lesson.
Unless, of course, the motos were not theirs to begin with...
Anyone with a translation of this slang?

'Desk waen' In broad terms 'vehicle racer' someone may be able to refine further.

It would be great if the police, make the parents and their kiddies who were racing
with these modified bikes, to all line up and get a nice photo or two, and have it all pasted on the papers
for all to see. Maybe a little media shame would help curb this kind of nonsense. Likely the parents
will all get to pay for releasing the bikes back to their babies, so they can all do this again somewhere else.

Kids having fun on theyre motorbikes which they take such pride in is not a bad thing. Better than smoking yaba and beating tourists

Interesting first post, Terry. Obviously you've been around for a while as you know what yaba is.

Kids here are not like kids in other more developed countries; they are typically not able to afford motorbikes by themselves so probably someone else's.. or through illegal activities.
They'll treat them like employees treat a company car, and have a group (gang? peer pressure?) mentality that would tend to foster bad habits like smoking yaba and beating tourists.
They need a proper lesson, being taken off the streets for a while and having the bikes confiscated or at least impounded for a lengthy period should give them time to ponder their actions.

Yes, I have to say that my initial reaction to Terry's post was that these 'races' were likely to go hand in hand with other illegal activities. Not to mention the danger involved for other road users.

Get 'em off the road, confiscate the bikes, fine the parents if the kids are in their early teens.
This is the way

Get them a track like an old airport runway or unused highway extension. Issue reasonable rules, some supervision, some facilities, prizes, media coverage and let them learn how to race the right way. It's been done many, many times all over the world, why not here? Pete

They have done it, Pete. Has been on the Thai morning news but can't remember where (yes, I do tune in as I can understand most of it but avoid the political parts).
Would like to see this as well but the herd (pack?) mentality dies hard...
