New pedestrian overpass for Market Village

Post by buksida »

The mayor of Hua Hin Mr. Nopporn Wutthikul has met with officials and local people to consider the building of a pedestrian overpass in front of Hua Hin Market Village shopping mall.

The General Manager of Hua Hin Market Village, Mr. Amornthep Aummeephien and the staff of the shopping mall provided information about the need and possibilities which may see the building of the new overpass. The current dangers posed for pedestrians crossing the road in this location are apparent with a number of serious incidents being reported. Apart from the density of the traffic and passengers disembarking from public transport vehicles, hazards also relate to vehicles attempting to make U-turns with the uncertainty created by nearby temporary lane markings. Another hazard relates to driver behavior at pedestrian crossings.

Courteous drivers who have stopped to give way to pedestrians on the crossing have reported near misses as vehicles in other lanes do not stop or reduce their speed. This has meant that pedestrians stepping past a stopped vehicle become vulnerable to those who do not recognise the crossing. In more recent times, traffic controllers have been deployed to avert this danger outside Market Village. This is a concern at a number of other locations on Petchakasim Road with fading road markings adding to the problem.

IMHO a total waste of time/money. There's already a bridge 50 yards North, why can't they use that? I always walk down to use it, Mrs BB however, will walk to the bridge, but still insist on crossing that road.

There are a couple of well placed bridges in Hua Hin that I use, but rarely do I find anybody else using them. In fact there was a family living on one of them a while back - it was like walking through their bedroom. Surely that must indicate how much they are actually used.

Unless there's an escalator up on either side, it will not make any difference - Thais (and many Farangs) do not use their legs.

Might be workable if the Market Village end could could have a bridge to access it from MV 2nd floor. Like some of the pedestrian overpasses do in Bangkok when next to shopping malls.

Hin is right, it would be far more likely to be used and with bluport about to open MV needs to make its self as consumer friendly as possible.

Sadly people suffer illness, and conditions, which means they cannot use their legs as the would wish...this makes doing 30 to 50 steps up or down impossible.
We used to be regular visitors to Bangkok, and users of the sky train, and elevated walkways....which mainly have this type of access., But now are just not able!
Thanks Paderborn

^ yeah, whenever I was in Bangkok and needed to walk or take the BTS I had to walk very slowly in the heat or risk being soaking wet almost instantly, ruining my day or evening.

Even when I was managing by slow walking and keeping to shady areas as much as possible, one trip up those stairs to the BTS or an overpass set me sweating to the max, with clothes becoming totally soaked within minutes. I would always walk further to the end of the BTS where there was an escalator if there was one or walk into an adjacent building to use their escalator or elevator if they had a bridge connecting to the BTS.
My brain is like an Internet browser; 12 tabs are open and 5 of them are not responding, there's a GIF playing in an endless loop,... and where is that annoying music coming from?

Paderborn, yes, agreed, not everybody can use stairs. However, aren't the less able more likely to be at risk crossing the road?

Most people have the problem when they arrive by songthaew. Would it not be easier if their route were changed to use the u-turns and drop/pick-up people directly outside Market Village in the more than ample bus bay? I've often seen them make the detour to drop passengers directly outside Hua Hin Hospital, why couldn't they change the route here?

Make parking/stopping on the South bound carriageway illegal. Yes, I know TIT and Thais and many Farangs would ignore it - maybe move one of the officers from regular tea money collection duties to enforce the parking restriction.

I think the biggest problem is human nature.

We have these bridges all over in the US and people will cross the road under them.

Traffic lights that activate when a button is pushed are another idea. But, people walking don't want to wait for the so they just step out.

Then there are the people who won't walk 10m to use a crossing area and will just cross wherever they want.

We've had this discussion already. Most Thais and many Farangs believe stopping at a red light at a pedestrian crossing is optional, and you don't have to stop - we've all seen the Bangkok Hospital lights.

I was in Chiang Mai a few days ago, when an American friend drove through a red light. I asked him why, and he said, "It's OK, it's only a pedestrian crossing." :?

[Edit] Automatic cameras at such traffic lights would probably work, eventually. They'd provide a steady stream of tea money as well. Certainly cheaper and less unsightly than building a bridge , which wouldn't be used.

A bridge would only work if a huge solid central separation wall was built along the central reservation at least 50 metres either side of it impassible to pedestrians, and if an escalator/lift was there for access to the bridge. If the bridge was enclosed and air conditioned it would also encourage people to use it.
It would also be safer if an off ramp on the southbound Petchkasem road with a bridge over the road to access the car park was built at the same time to avoid traffic having to U turn.
Same would help for the future Bluport Mall.
Nothing wrong with dreaming is there....

Of course, the penalty for running a red light would have to be a lot more than the few hundred Baht currently in place if the deterrent was going to be effective.

Petchkasem is not wide enuf for practical u-turns. And u-turns and extra traffic lights just add to the already increasingly aggravating traffic jams. Its time to put the canal underground, use that and the extra rail road property to make a multilane one way street and make Petchkasem one way in the other direction.

Maybe we could send an email to Donald Trump. He likes big walls, and the way it is shaping up he may be looking for a new project after November. :rasta:

No problems with one way traffic in Thailand - if you want to go the other way just do it. Maybe turn on your headlights - if they work...
