A huge gathering of police in Hua Hin last night pledged to clear up the town as the “Protect Hua Hin” project began.

The town and province has been beset by serious crime and top brass say that now they intend to get their collective fingers out.

Some 358 officers from all levels of the provincial force and local authority gathered at the Hua Hin clock tower last night determined to bring confidence back to tourists visiting the city.

Leading the way was Thanayut Wuthijaratthamrong of Region 7 who spoke of the wave of crime that has hit the town. He was speaking at the epicenter of the problem – the clock tower where bombing outrages occurred last month.

He singled those outrages out first but mentioned specifically the street attacks against tourists in the province – a clear reference to the brutal violence against the Owen family from the UK that shocked the world in April.

Apart from this he spoke of convenience stores robberies and attacks on ATMs – all of this had amounted to a crime wave that had seriously affected confidence in the area.

“Now is the time to do something” , he said as he inaugurated the “Protect Hua Hin” campaign. “We need to bring back confidence for tourists after all the damage done”.

And there is clearly some heat on the force to act – Deputy National Police Chief Wuthi Liptaphanlop is set to visit the area at the end of the month and will expect progress to have been made.

Meanwhile the force said that efforts to round up the suspects of the bombings named in three arrest warrants continue unabated.

Crime wave overwhelming Hua Hin? That's a bit of a reach, isn't it?

Sensationalized nonsense.

" The town and province has been beset by serious crime and top brass say that now they intend to get their collective fingers out. "

They will have their hands out as usual and that will be all that happens.

Oh, very clever! An ex workmate in the UK saw this and on top of the other publicity for the town recently has decided that it sounds like a "wild west town" and has scrubbed it off his first ever tour of the country.

Hua Hin intensifies criminal clampdown
Prachup Khiri Khan Police have stepped up a clampdown on crime in the district of Hua Hin, in a bid to boost tourist confidence.

Deputy national police chief Pol. Gen. Wuthi Liptapallop on Saturday chaired a press conference on the “Hua Hin Protection Strategy” criminal clampdown, introduced in response to the government’s policy against crime and influential figures.

The campaign is a collaboration of the police, the military, the administrative branch, volunteers and members of the public to prevent criminal acts and to boost confidence among the people and local residents as well as foreign tourists.

Pol. Gen. Wuthi said that, between September 1 and 16, 67 suspects were arrested for their involvement in arms and explosives matters while 120 others were arrested in cases related to narcotics.

In addition, 45 people have been apprehended in accordance with pending arrest warrants for gambling activities and misdemeanors as a result of alcohol consumption, he said.

The deputy national police chief added that the authorities have also inspected 68 establishments in the Hua Hin area during the operation.

Is it just me? Have I been reading the wrong news?

Normally any suspected criminal has their name and picture all over the Thai media? 232 Arrests and not one story?

Makes you wonder.
