Thai police seek ID on dismembered body found in freezer

Post by hhfarang »

BANGKOK (AP) — Thai police are attempting to identify a dismembered body found in a freezer when they raided an apartment and arrested three men — two thought to be American and one British — suspected of trafficking in forged passports.

Forensic experts will conduct a digital autopsy using a CT scan and extract DNA material from the corpse found in the raid Friday in an effort to identify it, police spokesman Krisana Pattanacharoen said Monday.

Bits of human tissue and teeth are the only things left that can be used to identify the body, chopped up into six pieces and frozen for months, said Dr. Triyarith Temahivong, deputy director general of Thailand's Central Institute of Forensic Science.

"The body still has human tissue stuck on it, which DNA can be extracted from," he said. "The teeth can be used as well for identification through dental records, but the person's nationality, age or gender can't be determined at all at this time so we'll see from the digital autopsy."

Police have contacted the U.S. FBI and Interpol for assistance. Krisana said police are also uncertain of the identities of the three suspects because they had multiple passports that could be fake or altered. They were arrested on charges of resisting arrest, illegal possession of firearms and ammunition, forging official documents and concealing a corpse.

"We're trying to figure out the nationalities of the suspects with the embassies now, we simply know that they're all foreign nationals," Krisana said. The suspect thought to be British shot and wounded a policeman during the raid and then was wounded himself.

A dismembered body of a foreign man was sent for a computed tomography autopsy at another hospital on Monday as police try to find more evidence to end the mystery of his identity.

Man's body cut up with chainsaw

The body found in a freezer during a raid on the lair of a foreign gang that made fake passports is believed to have been cut up using an electric saw.

The body, a foreign man, was discovered on Friday in a shophouse on Sukhumvit soi 56, and on Monday sent for a digital autopsy at Thammasat Hospital in Pathum Thani's Khlong Luang district.

The test's initial findings indicate the victim was an elderly European male whose body was cut up using an electric chainsaw.

Passport-forger 'confesses' to dismembering dead man: Thai police

https://au.news.yahoo.com/thewest/a/327 ... ice/#page1

AFP on October 1, 2016, 3:18 pm
Bangkok (AFP) - An American accused of running a passport-forgery ring in Bangkok confessed to dismembering -- but not murdering -- a man found in his freezer, Thai police said Saturday, as detectives continue to piece together details of the macabre crime.

The 63-year-old suspect, who police initially struggled to identify because of his numerous passports, was arrested one week ago alongside two other Americans accused of producing fake travel documents from their crime den in the Thai capital.

Police also found guns, drugs and the bagged body parts of a foreigner in their freezer.
Herbert La Fon, described as the gang's ringleader, allegedly opened fire on police during the raid before the trio was handcuffed and detained.

"He admitted only that he dismembered the body but said he had no involvement in murdering the Hungarian man," Bangkok's police chief Sanit Mahathavorn told reporters Saturday.

"Police are not yet convinced," he said, adding that he was up until 3am interrogating the American.

It was not immediately clear what La Fon's explanation for possessing or cutting up the corpse was. Police have stressed that his story keeps changing.

The plot thickens. Good material for Hollywood with this lot.

Kickboxer, chemist, CIA man - the many tales of Herbert La Fon

http://www.bangkokpost.com/news/general ... ert-la-fon

The main suspect in the body in the freezer case has a long and complicated history, but how much of it is true?

For decades, Herbert Craig La Fon appears to have deceived many of the people around him. But when the police peeled back the black plastic sheets to reveal the dismembered male body stashed in a freezerat his Sukhumvit Soi 56 home, he broke down.

"We were shocked. That's when we realised that [Mr La Fon] shot one of our officers because he was hiding a body," alleged Pol Col Nithithorn Chintakanon, deputy commander of the Tourist Police Division....
