Here's a photo of the plan for the Soi 56 area. It seems to show the elevated track merging to ground level, so maybe elevated section is for central HH only. Also shows a U bridge so looks like level crossing at Soi 56 will be gone.

That would certainly improve the safety factor at Soi 56 and help keep the traffic moving.

I’ve noticed over the past few months that construction of the groundwork for the new rail line has commenced in some areas - I asssume they are doing the “easy” sections first where there are no buildings to demolish or people to evict. I took this photo this morning showing the construction adjacent to the existing single line track in the area close to the Energy Project.

I hope that it gets finished on time so that there is an alternative option for travel to/from Bangkok

The photo from Dannie Boy shows work progressing with the usual machines required for road-building...
..But opposite the back entrance to MV they've now got tracked cranes, & some sort of on-site machinery..?

Kind of related to the railway development ...

B200bn Southern Corridor plan gets nod

The cabinet has approved in principle the Southern Economic Corridor (SEC), a scheme to link the Andaman Sea, the Gulf of Thailand and countries along the Indian Ocean rim.

The SEC is estimated to cost at least 200 billion baht, which will mostly be spent on transport links in four provinces, namely Chumphon, Ranong, Surat Thani and Nakhon Si Thammarat, according to Deputy Prime Minister Somkid Jatusripitak.

Mr Somkid stated that the provinces were chosen first because they complement each other in terms of their location.

"The South is the most fertile region but has low GDP per head due to scattered, non-unified development which lacked strategic planning in the past," he added.

Under the scheme, the two coasts will be connected by a new railway running from Nakhon Pathom, Hua Hin and Prachuap Khiri Khan to Chumphon, which will be completed in 2020. The government also plans to add a route to Ranong, where plans are in action to make it a hub for ocean transit links with the Bay of Bengal.

Elevated H/S railway line..

Post by usual suspect »

The other day I propped up my cycle next to the rail crossing on 94 & took a look-see at the big board showing the nice plans of the high-speed line coming thru' HH, and the slower tracks underneath it... It was when my cycling mate pointed to the artist's impression of the raised line...Then pointed south to the present flyover at the southern end of town..Boldly saying "& wot's gonna happen there"..?
He had a point..the bridge is about the height of the line.. :duck:
Then today I've just driven alongside the big new rail-bridge on the outskirts of Pranburi...again this mighty construction is only the height of a 'normal' rail/road bridge...Making me think are there any plans at all for the elevated H/S train to go South of HH..?

I don't think the current works are for the H/S railway - isn't that still a dream? The current works are for the twin track railway, and the elevated section ib Hua Hin is for the new station. At least, that's the way I understand it.

The elevated section only goes over the town centre. It's only a thought but I think that trains terminating/starting in Hua Hin will be parked on the lower level.

Not according to any of the plans that I've seen, that have been announced so far. In fact, whereas at one point they had said the high speed line would terminate at Nong Kae, they later amended that to say it would only go as far as the main Hua Hin station.

That's my understanding also. No concrete plans as yet, for the H/S line - just announcements of propsals to build it at some point in the future.

At least as of March this year, it was still awaiting approval.

Tourism and Sports Minister Weerasak Kowsurat will on Tuesday propose a high-speed tourism project during a Cabinet retreat in Phetchaburi.
[...]
Weerasak said if the project received Cabinet approval, a high-speed train line would be built from Bangkok to Hua Hin.

The BP today published updates on various railway construction projects around LOS. HH is mentioned:

- Two more high-speed projects -- the Bangkok-Hua Hin section and the Bangkok-Chiang Mai route -- are unlikely to win the cabinet’s approval by next month’s election, experts say. The Bangkok-Hua Hin project, worth 100 billion baht, is now in the process of being rerouted while more environmental impact assessments are done. -

SRT planning new double track route
The State Railway of Thailand (SRT) is planning to spend nearly 90 billion baht to upgrade the existing single-track railways leading to the deep South to double tracks to cut down travel times for passengers and promote tourism to the region.

The project will be integrated with the SRT's ongoing double-track upgrades in Chumphon, which will benefit rail passengers heading to the southern provinces of Surat Thani, Songkhla, as well as the Malaysian border town of Padang Besar, observers say.

"Once the upgrades are completed, travel times to resort cities along the southern coast will be significantly reduced, which we hope will boost the number of rail passenger numbers," said SRT acting governor Worawut Mala.

The project, which the SRT dubbed "Southern Route Phase 2", will see the state-owned rail agency allocate 24 billion baht to build a double-track line between Chumphon and Surat Thani, 57 billion baht to upgrade the existing single-track line between Surat Thani and Songkhla, and another eight billion baht to upgrade the track between Hat Yai and Padang Besar.

Mr Worawut used the example the ongoing double-track upgrades between Bang Sue and Chumphon to highlight the need to build additional tracks across the entire railway network.

"At present, it takes travellers between eight to nine hours to get to Chumphon from Bangkok's Bang Sue station," he said. "Once the upgrade is completed, it will only take about five hours."

Mr Worawut also said travellers heading to Hua Hin in Prachuap Khiri Khan will also benefit from the upgrade. "Once completed, our trains -- which have a maximum speed of up to 160 kilometres per hour -- will only take about two to three hours to reach Hua Hin," he said.

"Right now, Hua Hin-bound tourists have to spend about four to five hours on the road," said Mr Worawut. "We are confident that the shorter travel time will make rail trips more popular, especially among foreigners."

According to SRT figures, 90% of passengers taking the train from Bangkok to Chumphon are foreign tourists.

"The double tracks are expected to open in 2022," Mr Worawut said.

The double-track upgrade between Nakhon Pathon to Hua Hin is 33% completed, whereas works on Hua Hin-Prachuap Khiri Khan and Prachuap Khiri Khan-Chumphon sections have progressed by 30% and 19%, respectively, he said.

Wow. I've never been on a train in Thailand that has 90% foreigners on it.

Bit dubious about the Nakhon Pathom to Hua Hin 33% completion.
