Tsunami 12 years on, 400 bodies unidentified in Thailand

Post by PeteC »

Yesterday was the 12th anniversary.

Very sad and I didn't know the number was that high. It could be that entire Thai families were wiped out and no one alive to make inquiries or produce any DNA sample for comparison. I don't recall seeing the number of still missing, but it must be high. :( Pete

Critics have said Thailand's tsunami warning system remains inadequate, partly because it isn't maintained properly. The government has said it is in good order.
That's a very good point. I've lived here almost 5 years now, and I've no idea what Hua Hin's warning system sounds like. Has anybody ever heard it? Does it work?

Do they actually have a warning system in the Gulf? I was under the impression it was all on the Andaman side. Pete

I've always thought this was Hua Hin's warning tower (taken 2007). Have I been under a misapprehension all of this time?

^ That indeed looks like one from other photos shown in a Google search. I can't find an article that lists the locations of all the 136 towers. The best I could find is the below from a 2012 The Nation article. It's not very clear. Pete

Well, I walk the beach most days, and in the unlikely event of the warning going off, I'd probably wonder what it was, but wouldn't have a clue what it actually was. With things like fire alarms, they have test times/days to make sure they work, and to let people know what they sound like.

Has anybody ever heard the Hua Hin Tsunami warning?

I use an international warning system run by an NGO based in Queensland Australia. It will advise me via sms if there is any risk of a Tsunami in my current location. It does not cost anything and a few minutes of time to complete the form. Whilst Thailand does have a system in place it does raise the question as to its its effectiveness. I was working here at the time of Tsunami and thankful I was not on the beaches of southern Thailand.

Big Boy ,

dont worry about a tsumami in the gulf of thailand. That has never happend before and never will happen in a
hundret thousand years, because the gulf is not in the fire belt like the Andaman sea. The gulf is save and only affected by the monsun but not by earthquakes and tsumanis.

Never say never - there were a couple of earthquakes off the coast of Hua Hin a few years ago.

Tsunamis can only occur from megathrust earthquakes on a plate subduction zones, and around at 8.5-9.5. Excluding other non-earthquakes sources.

My pleasure :thumb:
It does seem to work. Provided early advisory warning following earthquake off Indonesia at the beginning of March this year. Well before anything from the media.
